I don't know what to say. 7 seconds in is just a guitar player.

Just a guitar player? That's Eddie Van Halen's skeleton!

Just a guitar player? That's Eddie Van Halen's skeleton! Haha. I thought it was, but I expected that obnoxious guitar to accompany his, err, virtuoso guitar playing.

he's still a badman! he looks a lot better currently, he even has a little gut on him now.. The picture is so dark at 7 seconds, i haven't the faintest idea of what mic is on that 4x12(is that the location of the mic your talking sozo?)
upon closer scrutiny, with the way its positioned, i'd guess a ribbon mic of some sort...best guess?

I cant find the high res copy of that video... holy moly that's steep $!!! Get a nady rms 4 or 5 www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/nady-rsm-5-ribbon-studio-microphoneput a 1.8 micron ribbon in it, you can pick up all you need here for about $30 or less www.diyaudiocomponents.com/products.phpand put a samar rt36 tranny in it(i think) www.samaraudiodesign.com/RibbonMicrophoneTransformers.htmlthe whole thing will be around a few hundy, and sound amazing....or just get one of these shinybox.com/ribbon_microphones.php?osCsid=8c58043abb59f9965a75c56642485303 i have a pair of these(that i built myself, they're alctron rm8b) i put the samar rt 32 tranny's in them, and they are killer. also beware, all the chinese donor mics that say they have thinner(better) ribbons in them, they are LYING, the ALL have 6 micron ribbons which really suck, 1.8 ribbons will give you much more output(no worries with gain on pre's), and much more nuanced and smooth sound results. if you decide to go the diy route, let me know if you need any more info or help soz..

The quite cheap MXL R144 claims to have a 1.8 micron ribbon, might be a good deal to just exchange the chinese transformer to something better. (Well, i can't imagine they are lying about this?)

2 things..
So, if EVH is in a studio (presumably HIS studio) why is he all sweaty? Don't they have A/C?
#2.. I struggled for years with the thought that somehow a chinese ribbon with ribbon and transformer mods was as good as any of the expensive ones.. Until I got my first Royer. The Royer so handily beat all of my modded ribbon mics, I gave them away to my cousin to use in his home studio. It's night and day, really.

Why is he shirtless too? Sure, pop off your shirt for the stage, but the studio...keep it on. I guess he's making a video though, so he's gotta be shirtless and sweaty.

He apparently feels about shirts like I do about shoes.

Did you use any of Marik's ribbon mics or tranny's? My Diy's sound kill..1.8 ribbons and samars.

I tried different tensions, different corrugation styles. The all had their usefulness. I tried Lundahl and Edcor(which sound surprisingly good) transformers. I don't know how to explain the difference, but the Royer just sounds better. It's like the frequency profile just fits the ear a lot better. It's still full of the "ribbon" sound, but more clear and usable for most things.

Y dey no level matching?! For the lead guitar I preferred the 57. For the rhythms the Royer, sorta. I'd probably blend them. Does every guitar shootout on Youtube have to be by a Pantera fan? Do none of them like good music?

A royer 121 or 122 blends so well with traditionally used dynamics too!! I often record twin guitar amps/cabinets with a 121 on one speaker and either a 57 or 421 on the other speaker. Sometimes R121, 57 and a 421! You can get a variety of tones and never need to use any EQ. You can achieve what you need from blending.
