I hate it but one or two times every year some people think they get full service - without paying the bill. It makes me so angry, I don't have words for it.
I always pay my bills. When I was younger and money was more an issue I always called the one and talked to him. Most often people told me that I should stay cool and that I can pay it step by step - without any interest on top. They just where happy because I talked truth to them.
I don't understand some customers. I get the impression they already know that they cant pay but they order the full service anyway.
Today I did try to solve it in a friendly phone conversation. The answer was that my work "is not worth a single cent". The day I quit the job he did write me an e-mail how awesome the track sounds at home and in the car....
Its just stupid.... and sad.
My guesswork is: He wants to get away with paying ZERO!!!

I used to deal with this more, but as a gigging musician I find it less common because a) I meet them out and b) If I'm talking to a promoter/other band/whatever I'm always going to be 100% upfront that I did work for this artist and they stiffed me. Also a lot of my gigs come from peers/friends and neither of us want to shaft the other, so that degree of respect enables that relationship as we all have jobs we work on the side. I actually found having more rules and structures to how I work, philosophically, helped. The "pop stars" stay away. Fine by me.
Actually I haven't had a single recording gig that ended with reduced/renegotiated/non-payment since I took this kind of stance. But, then, I'm not trying to get 100% of my income through being a recording engineer. It's more of a service I offer, and I word it that way.

My church upbringing, Christianity, moral values and that darned verse about "Do not sure each other" are all shackles on me when it comes to collecting the thousands and thousands of dollars owed to me. I should get a lawyer to do that also. I'll take your post and example as good advice!

Anything over 200 bucks, I get half upfront unless I know where they live and even then, sometimes I'd have to know their mothers.
I had one guy who ran the blackhole in dundalk, md. He regularly stiffed bands, including myself. Found an excuse why we weren't worth the money we were owed for playing his venue. One band he owed, they finally got him to send them a check. He wrote it out to the band name. Useless. They aren't a big enough band to have a band bank account or any sort of know how to deal with it.
Last I heard, the owner was in jail and the business was locked by the police banning all business from the grounds for a period of 3 years.
I really hate cheap bastards.

Where's Henry Hill, Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito when you need them? Those mob guys knew how to collect!

In this case its a police case because its fraud. It made my customer pay me. There is no reason to see this customer again... so good job by my lawyer. And the best of it all - he is not billing me for the phone call.
