Has anyone used the ami f44 small condensers ? Does any one use the Mercenary Audio Km69?
I was thinking of seeing how close they are to the km84i and seeing if anyone has any real world experience with these. Also if anyone has any of these are they finding it has the same off axis sound as the km84's? One thing i like about the km84's is that if you move around a bit when recording the off axis sound has the same tone just a little dip in db if you move. I do not like mics that start to change tone if you are too far off. Its hard to record stiff like a robot if its just yourself doing all the work like so much today. Anyway peoples thought on these would be appreciated. I have a feeling the km69 and the f44's are the same basic mic.

I've never used the AMI but I tried the KM69 when it first came out. I had a demo mic for about 3 days and was able to compare it to km84s, schoeps CMC6s and akg c451Es and wasn't really impressed. I really wanted to like the mic but it just didn't do it for me, it was brighter than I expected and didn't sound anything like the 84s I had at that point. I've always loved the 84 because if just sits in mixes so nicely and the extended top never gets harsh. I even liked the good old 451Es way better than the 69s.

I think there was a thread where someone shot out a bunch of SDC's, and I think most (if not all) of those were included.

Is AMI still producing products these days? I haven't been sure what the status has been there since Ollie Archut passed away.

These were so hyped by Fletcher as the second coming of the KM84, well just like the Ginsu Knives they just never lived up to the hype!

Being on the inside at Mercenary for the KM69 and also moving a few F44's after that time, I can tell you that Oliver was a more picky with the FET in the F44 and he removed the hi-frequency peak from the KM69 in the F44 as well. The Km69 was a bit brighter...

Ya know, I've still got a set of Ginsu Knives I picked up in the 80s - I've abused those things for years and they're still pretty sharp! One of those things you see somewhere cheap and you buy it on impulse - damned if they don't stick around forever. They slice tomatoes paper thin, and dice onions without shedding a tear! They can even saw through this PVC pipe and they're still sharp enough to slice paper!

I finally got the chance to compare the F44 against a nice Km84. They are definitely in the same camp. Problem is the 2 x F44's sound just a little different from each other. One has just a tad bit more air then the other. I still feel the Km84 had a little more lower girth to it then the F44. But all in all they all sounded like they were from the same family. They are not "Brittle" sounding like the km184 and I woud have not liked the KM69 if Oliver had to remove the HF peak in those. So yes the F44 are good. I think they may have just a wider cardiod pattern then the Km84 but off axis they are great consistent tone.
