I just put this 3 minute video up to demonstrate the new Avantone CV-95 mic. It's a tube mic, but it's based on the classic "95" FET mic. If you're on a budget, it was better than anything I've tried yet anywhere near its price range. I bet this would be a great candidate for some mods over at Shannon's place. This wasn't my best recording, very flatfish, but I think with a little tweaking, it could be a contender in the budget main vocal mic sweepstakes.

Hey Martin I think this is a great video! What type of SW do you use for the Vid production and editing? From watching your vids and listening to your mixes, you definitely like that LD Vocal very upfront and present in the mix. I think if you took off -1db to -1.5db on your LD Vox fader, the ambience around the vocal will be more present with out having to turn up the verb and delay.. The ld vox will blend with the rest of the mix and gel better. Also turning up the verb can push the LD vox back in the mix to where it's not as upfront and present how you like your LD Vox... Just a little friendly advice from what I hear... Other than that I enjoy your vids like these! Where is your Soyuz vid

I think avantone just means comparable to mikes with a similar design and the 9 refers to polar patterns:
Type: Tube-Type True Condenser Capsule: Dual-sided 25mm diaphragm (32mm outside diameter) center-terminated gold-sputtered Mylar (6 micron) Polar Pattern/s: 9 Patterns selectable at PS-1BV Power Supply
Sounds like they were trying for something 47ish ?

Thanks for taking some time to think on my stuff ChaseUTB, feedback is really appreciated. For these videos that feature a mic, or my mic shootouts, I push the vocal up a little, but I will take a closer look at new mixes and try your suggestions.
jcoutou mastered one track for me a while back, and he asked for the same mix with a slightly lower vocal, so you're probably on to something.
* Chase, I've used a few different sources for making the videos. First I had a friend use a small camera, but he's a great photographer, so he lit it well. For the next video, a buddy brought over a $20,000 SONY camera. For the two more recent vids, I used my wife's iPhone. She held it for one, then I bought a mount for it, so this one was easy to do by myself. I couldn't keep asking favors for these kinds of videos.
What's the same about them all, is they're finished with Final Cut Pro. My friend is an Apple expert, and he gives me a hand putting it all together with syncing, edits and graphics.

"What is the classic 95?"shh.. can't say exactly but.. does U195 ring a bell? So if it's based on the classic "95" mic, wouldn't it be the U95, 9 pattern tube MIC, rather than the cardiod only U195 FET? THE U95 is supposed to be pretty boss while the U195 has a rep as being underwhelming.

Forgive me, I got it backwards, I wasn't aware of both of those mics. It's the U95 that inspired it. That's one reason I thought it would be a good idea to show it to the realgear crowd.
I'll edit my other post.

Yep. The Bock version didn't twiddle my knobs, so I sold it, but my wife Janet did some tracks in L.A. with some session cats who were in Ringo's band a few years ago, and they used the Soundelux U95. $hit was money.
My main issue with the Bock was it's pickup pattern in cardioid was just to wide. It was like I'd moved the dial to a wider setting, only I didn't. The K67 capsule has the perfect pickup width to my ears. I know that's not such a technical description, but I think you know what I mean.
The Avantone's pickup width sounds right, like a U47 or 67 do. My voice was a little scratchy the day I did this video. It would be even smoother if paired with a Neve style pre, I'm guessing. I used the Dizengoff D4 on this video.

I think your vids are awesome and I enjoy them a lot. That was shot with an iPhone it looks great.. Since you are featuring the mic I think you are actually right in having the vocal louder than usual! I think the avantone vid is great and looks great as well as the intro... Was the Soyuz shot with the 20,000 SONY? I need to get Final Cut Pro... How do you like it ? Ease of use? Not trained or studied in Final cut, however I cal learn quickly:) I have a 4K cam with Leica lens I purchased to shoot music videos before I became injured... IDK for rendering I could always use PT, however I need to brush up my audio for video chops...Im pretty sure in PT you can split audio and video as well during import ( lol ya it's been awhile ) and as long as I don't need drastic video edits I could process accordingly... Even though no vids are one take renders so that might not work lol How many takes did you shoot for the avantone video in this thread?

Did two takes for the Avantone, 60% of one 40% of the other. Final Cut pro's a monster. I can barely find my way around. I've been lucky my friend helps me with it. The thing about it is power. You can edit a movie with that thing, but Logic X is difficult enough, without me having to dig too deep into something like Final Cut Pro, so I ask for help.
This is the video I did with the expensive Sony camera. The lighting and color were off, I think. Chase, if it's OK to look a little home made, I think you should invest in one very good light and use the iPhone. That'll give you some extra cash to use toward other things.
On the Avantone video, I used the CV95 as the voice over mic. It synced up easily and we muted the iPhone audio.
Here's the video with the Sony camera. The intro was from a different camera though. Nice resolution, but we took almost no time at all getting lighting and color balanced.

3 or 4 years ago, when I had frozen shoulder after surgery. I filmed a mate playing a few original tunes in my studio. I used three cameras.... a cheap canon domestic digital camera, an iPhone 4 and an iPad. I edited it in Final Cut Pro ....which was a few versions back.
Doing multicam stuff like this is really simple in FCPX.
Martin, sit down and watch some tutorials on you tube.. I find video editing fun, relaxing and way easier than doing audio 8)
cheers
