IME, a mic which always "hears" the best sonic structure in instruments is the Neumann CMV563. It's hit and (mostly) miss on vox. But on instruments it always astonishes; turning heads in the control room.

Not sure how much it fits the thread, but I recently got a Xaudia "Beeb" Reslo and was very pleasantly surprised. It's very sensitive to the preamp pairing, but it can really shine on vocals, acoustic guitar, and as a mono full drumkit mic.

How much is one worth shelling out for?

Mostly the M7 cardioid capsule. I also use and like the M8 omni. I have yet to find an M7 mic that isn't yummy, vintage M7 extra yummy! One of the reasons I don't want to play with your pre, I'm very, very afraid I would want multiples!😊 But , If you ever want one demoed around KC feel free to send it my way!

I have only ever used the vintage variety. I don't know how the modern recreations compare. Haha, well I totally sanction your wanting multiple Pueblos!! :-) On that subject: A battery powered version is progressing towards release. This will offer options to accommodate Pueblo quality at two or three price points; bringing it within striking range of 500 series affordability.

Most of the modern M7's are lacking they don't seam to have that dimensional quality that I call the "you are there factor" unless tuned By somebody like Shannon Rhoad's. Don't tempt me! But Glad to see the Pueblo sound being more accessible!

The Blue Mouse with a transformer is a good bargain used, as is the old Beyerdynamic MC740. Oktava MK mics. Sometimes Violet microphones go cheap used as well

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. My fav snare mic is a reworked cheapo Sterling ST-31 1/2" condenser. I got it for free and never used it until Michael Wagener gave me the tip on it. I have mine attached to a 57. I really find it to be a reliably usable sound. I didn't get it for free, however. I had to pay fifteen bucks for it at one of our numerous pawn shops. Another el cheapo that I have found to work well is the Samson Q7 vocal mic on tom toms. Supercardioid, but not too nasty off-axis, I find them all the time barely used for 20 bucks. They don't look nearly as cool as a 421. but sound as good or maybe better with more rejection off axis. They have a little presence peak which seems to put a little point on the stroke.

Dang. Cowboy, these can hang with the KM84's? I would love a useable, affordable pair of SDC's. I once bought the Little Blondies and returned them. Even the might KM84, which I've borrowed from a friend many times might be described as a little nasal. So despite the fact I consider them to be the best overall choice for an acoustic guitar mic, I'm always looking for alternatives. *I think that audio engineers and studios would do well to have the KM84 for many reasons, but for myself, I prefer the Soyuz 0-11, they're quite similar to the KM 84, just a little more bloom and richness, right where you want it.

Well I don't know if they hang or not but these are more than usable. I've gotten some of the best Acoustic takes ever with these. As always, it's about positioning and room.

I'm getting some MXL 991 on Thursday. I'll try to get some decent clips before and after mods. They were super cheap. Best case scenario, they will make sense to be mentioned in this thread.
