I saw a thread on big purple about the mics you dumped, and I couldn't help but think of the mics others dumped that I fell in love with.
1. MBHO KA1000/440, Lollipop, Lollipop, omni from the folks who Make Capsules for Dave Bock and the KHE, I paid $200 and love this thing on female voice and violin!
2 Steadman N90 I had 3 of these sold them off when I was low on cash. they are the predecessor to the Heil Large dia Dynamics. Think RE20 with proximity effect, because they use the RE20 Capsule without the Varible D loading !
3 AKG D1000/D1200 they swam to be the same thing at $30ea a 57 with some highend sparkle and built to last!

The original CAD Equitek E-200. Really nice, versatile mic. Also, huge and pretty cool looking. The first time I was in a major studio, everyone picked it for my voice. Over vintage U87s, vintage 414s with the CK12 capsule and some other nice mics.
I don't necessarily agree with that call today but it's a nice mic and I grabbed one not long after. I like it a lot in omni in front of an acoustic guitar.

The original CAD Equitek E-200. Really nice, versatile mic. Also, huge and pretty cool looking. Absolutely!! I sill have mine and will never let it go. It is my only 'medium diaphragm' condenser.

I don't own a 414, but my friend does, and every time I remember to try it, the results are great. I always think big, U67-ish, and forget how good the 414 really is. I have to remember to try it more often, especially for background vocals.
Oh, here's a tip, if you do have a KM84, try it on vocals. Again my friend lends me his pair sometimes, and with a pop screen, that thing sounds like a Marvin Gaye record.
Sometimes I just don't want to bother borrowing my friend's 84's, so I pull out my SM58, throw it in front of my guitar amp, and I've never felt I should redo the track, because it's just fine.

Almost bought a pair of those MBHO LDCs that were on ebay months ago. Exactly my thinking, CK12 type Haun capsules. But they weren't that cheap, and the only review I could find said they were really fast and bright, which I sorta doubted in degree. Ended up getting another KM84 instead. Other thing not long before that that was lame to pass on were a pair of Josephson hypercardioids for a very good price, a mic they don't make any more.

If the 414 is a dark horse then my mic collection is just hipster level obscure!
My harmonica mic is probably the one my clients have the most fun with. Singing through a guitar amp can be very inspiring, especially for singers who are feeling self conscious. Screaming through a delay pedal into an overdriven amp and rolling around and being stupid can really make all the difference and get the oxygen flowing.
My Oktava MK220 has gotten compliments for looking supremely Russian. I don't really own anything much nicer.

I sort of regret selling my AT4033. I think possibly it was my favorite AT. If I can find another one for under $200 I might pick it up again.

Shure KSM32 is a neutral sounding mic that works great on acoustic instruments. Wouldn't be my first pick for vocals, but it's a great mic for capturing sounds naturally.

I wouldn't say they fly "below the radar" but I just scored a pair of Coles 4038. In the immortal words of Ralph Kramden: Hamina-hamina-hamina!!! Why did I wait so long? It was like a reunion with an old friend; as soon as I tried it out the first comment I made was "Ahh...So THAT'S how they got that sound"!

I took a look and the M300 was selling for $750 or more. At that price, you can get a KM84, so, you'd prefer the M300 to a K84, or in addition to?

Really you could record a whole album on this dynamic, you can just as easily stick it in a kick drum as record a great vocal with it.
I think it has to be THE most underated mic ever imho.

I have 15 old MCA SP-1 mics I bought for $39 each. I redid the electronics and added several different Mic-parts capsules, 414, 67, 87, 47 and some oddballs. These are some of my favs here now. I have less than $2k into the entire set.

I kept mine over SM7B, MD441, and RE20. The M88TG just ticks a few boxes for me for some reason. Don't get me wrong, they are all great mics, but that's the one I still have.

Not easy to find many dynamics more expensive than a 441 already! I know guys who love M88 and guys who hate it! The thing about a 441 or 421 is the size and then there is the whole thing with those expensive clips!

I wouldn't say better, necessarily, I would say in the same league but different. I put the M88TG, RE20, MD441, and SM7B on a variety of drums, amps, voices, etc, and they all struck me as special, recorded many albums and demos with all of them. I think the reason I ultimately kept the M88 is the somewhat compact form factor. All those other mics are huge. The other factor was it was the most suitable mic for my own voice and a few friends of mine, out of the lot. You asked about the MD441, that one was a little too dark on top with a few of my singers, and sort of an odd form factor for a vocal mic. Like a saber right in your face. If I had the budget and a good reason, I'd buy all of them again "in a heartbeat." Particularly the SM7B for strident and loud voices. Seeing that I am a small self-serving operation, I don't need that many mics that do sort of the same thing for me or the few other people I record. The MD441 would probably come next, and then maybe an RE20 if I was in the right mood, haha. I agree with you though, the MD441 is a gorgeous instrument. Incredibly versatile as well. When I think about putting the MD441 on just about any source, I think about immediate gratification. Like, you got this, little buddy.

Ears (and voices) are funny things. I have all of these mics except the 441. I own two M88TGs and the only thing I really like them on is kick. I hear they are good on toms, but haven't tried them there. On my voice they are too bright and bring out some undesirable frequencies. They also seem very sensitive to plosives. Whereas with an SM7b or RE20, I can almost always get a useable vocal quickly. I probably should try out my M88s on some additional things, but to date, I've been a bit disappointed with them.

As has been mentioned,almost any Beyer, Sennhieser, MBHO and Gefell mic are excellent. Of particular use are the Beyerdynamic MC740/840, the AKG D320 for snare, the AKG D3700/3800 as all around dynamics and Beyerdynamics M201.
Brad try the M88 on bass drum.

M88's are awesome.
The MD421 and 441 have such annoying mic clips. The 441 looks a little better. But the 421 clip is shit, totally puts me off owning one.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. My fav snare mic is a reworked cheapo Sterling ST-31 1/2" condenser. I got it for free and never used it until Michael Wagener gave me the tip on it.
