Dbx160x/tx/a sub $200 used best comp metering ever, and as The Dr said Aphex. For some grit Old Ashley and Furman. The Audioarts are considered by many to be the poor mans SSL buss comp, never got that myself but they can be had at good prices. Old broadcast comps like Innovonics can be had for sub $400 and get a taste for opticals.

FMR RNC is a perfectly good beginner comp/limiter. I use mine on vocals, ac. guitar or bass when tracking.

Shhhhh STFU... you'll drive the price up. These guys are asleep. So don't wake them.

Building one of the DIY 1176 style compressors can be a good idea if you have the basic tech type skills.

As I mentioned in another thread, my favorite "budget" compressor that can be found used for a decent price would be the SPL Dynamaxx. I own a ton of compressors but the Dynamaxx is one of my favorite for drums (I own 3), especially snare drum. You can literally crush something and still retain it's acoustic qualities. To me it's better than my old favorite, the SSL channel compressor (the strong point of which is really the incredible gate). The Dynamaxx's gate on the other hand is unusable. The SPL also sounds terrific on anything else and as I stated previously, makes a very good mix bus compressor. If I didn't have my wonderful Vari Mu on my mix buss I'd probably use the SPL.

Non-fashion pieces are great values, besides Aphex, Symetrix and others made good designs, some with dbx VCA's as well.
I live on my 5 651 Expressors here, they are problem solvers. 661 users can bypass the tube stage on the internal jumper or do as I do, add a front panel bypass switch. Then you have more options than with any other comp.
