spock so is that ram a fair bit faster than what you used to have so you actually have faster short term processing capacity in the same 16 gigs plus faster cpu? I think it will be...

Some interesting comments on here. I'd definitely not be taking a soldering iron to the Ram. I agree that it's stupid (or cynical) of Apple to have soldered it in the first place. 16Gb of Ram 4 years ago when I bought my current model was quite limited anyway ... but to not have moved on from there, in 4 whole years, makes no sense to me.

So, stupid things happen there, and the fixed place RAM, Video cards, stuff soldered on the motherboards were the source of most of these issues. I think things would be different if Jonathan Ives were President and CEO and not Tim the Accountant.

Every major computer manufacturer has tried to be a consumer electronics company, unfortunately for us Apple has been the one to succeed, but it has given us IPhone, iPod, and iPad!

I don't know... I think Apple stuff is great and continues to be so. I started out with the Titanium 500 and 550 MacBooks and was cutting trailers on them using the first Final Cut Pro; stuff running ahead of movies like Lord of The Rings in 450 of the top grossing theaters in the U.S. at the time, without fail. If I or my little apple machine screwed the pooch, 100's thousand of dollars would've been lost. Over the years, I'm 6 MacBooks/pros in now; Lucky #7 arrives on the 17th, loaded for bear. This doesn't mean I don't have some gripes/annoyances, like no SD card slot now, but I'll get over it and keep working.

Adam I go back to the 9600, the days when Adobe ,Avid & Digii customers were what kept Apple breathing. The trash can was the first sign that Apple no longer cares about pros, the daily evolution of OS and the strange update schedule of pro apps prove that point. In the past their have always been apple machines that were a cut above the rest, now our worst fear of the intel era is reality, Generic Machines. I have been preaching for years that we in the entertainment industry Need to migrate to a more industrial OS, the bloated support everything builds are going to lead to an entire new generation of unplug to play, I don't want to go back there!

On the Crucial site, you can pop in your machine into and it'll tell you what you need and the max available. For the SSD, the 850 EVO either on Amazon or Newegg is generally well liked.

As jcoutu1 mentioned 2.5 size SSD is what you want. I also replaced my CD Drive with a second SSD for extra space. This requires an adapter available through ifixit.com or many other places.

I have 5 SSD hard drives all crucial. I only chosen them over samsung because of the price over here in NZ. Both brands make good drives.

Try getting a pre 2013 before they soldered the ram in. I think you can drop a pair of 16gb DDR3 Sticks in it and have it run at 32gb.

I have a mid 2012 the ram is not soldered in.. ingot a great deal at micro center for $80 out the door for my 16gb crucial ram... the guy there kinda talked me into the 850 evo since I record to OWC 7200 hdd, he says The hundred dollar price difference can go to something else considering I'll just be the boot drive, applications, and my NI komplete drive... i use PT 10.3.1 32 bit and Live 32 bit so I think going to 64 bit apps with 16gb will be awesome compared to the 4gb I'm used too! Do you have links that show my model can handle 32gb? Someone else mentioned the 32gb ram for certain MBP models but it was vague so I'm not sure...

Thank you for all your help! The guy at micro center was saying to get the 850 evo due to the read and write speeds being so close to the 850 pro.. Aside from the five year warranty there wasn't much difference for the hundred dollar price increase.. Now i am kinda leaning towards the 850 eco since I record to OWC 7200 HD... he did say replacing one of the mechanicals in my OWC would help with sample libraries but most of that is on the main HD and again he said he still thinks 850 Evo will be plenty even with having sample libraries on the evo. IDK lol

IDK lol Sorry, didn't even realize you linked the Pro and not the Evo. I generally purchase the Evo for machines, like your guy suggested. I use this drive in a Mac Pro at a studio that I sometimes record at. Show up, pop their disk out, pop mine in, plug in my iLok, and I'm in business.

Awesome thank you so much, it looks like the 850 Evo will be the ticket I will also save $ in the process so this is very good... def looking forward to my 64 bit move... Ive been stable for so long having great performance I never cared... Now with UAD forcing my hand ( other things as well ) I feel like it's time! With Apple hosing its product lines IDK what will happen to the Mac Pro next release.. I will prob stick with what I got until the wheels fall off, then I will look at new Macs... thanks again jcoutu1

I am no expert. just want to mention a couple thinks. I recently got an 850 EVO 1 TB. no troubles with it. I got it, to put piano sample libraries on. I do not know much about it, but I have heard something about wanting to leave a certain percentage of the drive empty, instead of filling it up. (maybe 30 %. not sure now.) thus I got the 1 TB, instead of 500 GB. only saying, in an effort to help.

Just be aware of this if you ever experience dropouts while recording drums. Use to have this problem a lot and when I swapped the hard drive it disappeared. support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201666

Wow, didn't know this. Saw you could get it stock with 16GB RAM... figured you could at least upgrade it to 32GB. Even my old 2011 Mac Book Pro I used for years before upgrading, I was able to get to 16GB installed. I figured in 5+ years that wouldn't be the case though..

I was hoping that they would go to 32 - at least. My MBP is 4 years old (and still going fine) but when I am in the mood for virtual instruments the 16Gb max ram starts to be a problem so I was hoping that at my next MBP upgrade I would be able to get more memory. Pity. You going to the moon?
