First thread from me and I'm going big picture. How much different would your set-up be if you could pick your equipment from scratch today, as opposed to accumulating it over time?
Looking around, I see a few clues to my room's evolution over the years, an ADAT XT - symbol of the '90s, a 2408 - the dawn of a new era, some useful dbx and Lexicon stuff going back further. Since I'm a hybrid guy, I use most all of it (well, not the ADAT) but I wonder how different my workflow would be if I hadn't built the room slowly over 20 years? I've sold off two consoles in that span so there has been renovation, but always with an eye to maximizing the value of what I currently owned, never a baby and bathwater approach. That's been a trend the last couple years as busy pros move to a recall is king work flow. I haven't really been pressured to follow that model, but I do wonder what it would look like if I woke up one day and all my tried and trues were gone. Certainly, I'd reconsider some purchases that were dismissed because I already had something covering that ground, but I wonder how much different the end result would be picking each piece to create a workflow from scratch?

Here's how I would spend if I started from scratch:
I know I'm forgetting something......
A. Buy Quality PC with highest speed CPU, 3 quality fast drives with tons of space and lots of PCIe slots and USB ports B. Hire an acoustician to analyze and design treatment for the mix and recording ends of my dual purpose room.
1. Buy quality instruments and amps and cabinets. 2. Buy quality LDC, SDC pair, ribbon pair and other of the usual suspect mics. 3. Buy quality preamps that have EQ's and mic/line switchability. 4. Buy quality converters-at least 32- audio interface and Daw software. Start mixing with stock DAW plugins. 5. Buy mono and stereo compressors and mono and stereo EQ's 6. Buy FX- 7. Buy Summing Mixer and quality a-d stereo converter.

Simple would have bought a Radar 24, a ton of Geffels , 414uls, & Sony C38's 37's and 48's. Upgraded PT during the AVID trade in programs. Grabbed a bunch of old Altec and other old tube gear before the market took hold ! Should have kept the MCI jh24. Should have put the Guitars and The DDA Forum Mute The Vinyl the Sota Turntable, the ARC Amp and Preamp in the den to protect them from Hurricane Ike and Grabbed my 414 Brass Capsule JW mod from Hazen before we evacuated.
