I had a email come in about a new plug in from Isotope called Neutrino... It has a frequency masking option, that intrigued me, so I downloaded and installed the demo this morning and had a play. It also has a sort of automatic mixing mode.. that I thought would be interesting to try... So, I instantiated it across drums bass acoustic electrics and voice and let it do its thing...this was on stuff just at the tracking stage... It was interesting, I didn't like it.. but it was interesting... as a quick test I disabled the plugs, and through a Logic EQ on the 2 buss and just tweaked the tracking mix, with the 2 buss EQ ... for no other reason than just fun... within about 10 secs I had a pretty good sound.... certainly I liked it more than the auto thingy... Anyways it got me thinking... I have never EQ 'd like that before... Push up the faders on a tracking mix... and EQ on the 2 buss first... I always approach it from EQing on individual channels... I am gonna have a play around today for an hour or so and see how it flies... EQ on the 2 buss, then a little on a per channel basis as needed and see how it comes out... Bob Olhsson is this essentially how it was done way back when? it was kinda fun... 8) and its nice to have fun occasionally..... cheers Wiz

I had a RGO member tell me to try these settings on the 2 buss before comp 100hz @+2db. 240@ -2. 1.5@ +2. Then 12.5@ -2 or +2 dependin Of course not written in stone but seems to work most of the time, These settings were for my API 550b 's on the buss (all I had at the time) but so far it's been a good starting place .
Edit : I have to credit to Cary Miller

Push up faders and listen, set up 2 bus eq and comps that are appropriate. Generally massage the bus. Then go back and get to mixing. The eq stays on and mix into the 2 bus compressor.
That's how I was taught and generally how I still roll.

When I began in 1964 most consoles had no eq. beyond simple bass and treble if any at all. Most studios only had two or three outboard equalizers, typically Pultecs.

I used to never touch Bus EQ until I mixed, but since I've been using MusEQ, I've found I love the M/S setting and a particular preset that I tweak. I've been throwing that on and mixing into it and it has really been successful.

I find that treating the mix bus as yet another track to be perfected works for me. By the time I'm finishing my mix, I'm probably also starting to dial in the perfect mix buss chain and the settings get very stable where I'm not looking for drastic changes. At this point, the mix is probably almost done.
