Continuing a converstaion that ercin was kind enough to chime in on and to help try to explain to the dullard that is the greatest part of me, I would like to hear more of what he and others have to say about what future technologies will bring to both the table and our ears in the way of capturing and experiencing sound. I read this small article concerning Sennheiser's announced AMBEO 3D offering and thought it a likely starting point for mine and others enlightenment. Read the wiki on Ambisonics if you haven't. There are ways to do portions of ambisonics (ignoring up/down) with standard tools. There are plug options for decoding and moving sound. I've done a fair amount of horizontal only stereo for live acoustic capture using a pair of ribbons and an omni, benefit of post-capture steering. Could be broken out into surround. Dual mid-side is interesting too, stepping away from full 3D.
I don't see us all wearing helmets much of the time to experience 3D audio, or building dedicated listening rooms onto our houses. Most of this will still get fold down to traditional surround or stereo. To call it a format of choice is to ignore the vast majority of audio niche.
