Heard the sample, sounds good. Is this sample your new caps in the V28. If so, A good sample would be between an un modified V28 and then a modified V28 with your caps, with the same setup and no other effects or processing.

The amp sounds great in the room, put a mic on it it turns into a super smooth tone ahahah. Hard to capture the amp, you loose all the energy and excitement with wrong mic placement. Nashville Amp show, studio, doing amp / capacitor stuff etc.... too busy!

Got confused. Topic title is "CAPI VP28 clip" and states sample of new caps.

That's a big sound. I'd love to hear it without any reverb.

It was a late night 2AM 2 minute test so I didn't overly annoy anyone. Even a studio tracking room bleeds in the house and outside with a 100 watt Marshall. When I get it where I want it ill post raw clips for you guys to listen in your environments and speakers to let me know if there are any ugly's in the recording...
I'm not a MIX guy really, always more worried about tracking and source sound, so any EQ recommendations would help!
The VP28 did sound the best so far, even over the 73JR slightly....

IMO, the amp sounds wild and on the verge of self destruction, like any self respecting van halen 1 marshall should, great job on that thing.

Back in the day I wasn't a Marshall guy, I was a Vox AC30 guy. I still have all of them. I modded a Vox V15 amp to be a preamp only and would run the guitar into it then out into the AC30s. Talk about "blowing up"? I literally caught those things afire several times and had to have them rebuilt. About two years ago I found a tech with all the original parts who restored them to orginal. So I plugged in the preamp again and cranked em up. I love the sound of those old amps on the verge of meltdown. It can be a pricey proposition but the sound is glorious!!

I've got a 65 Bassman that I run through a modern 2x12 cab. Thing is the balls when you crank it to 10.

I have a 1960 1484 silvertone, matching it with my tele w/seymour duncan bridge hotrail, all knobs cranked, it sounded pretty halen without the bottom push of a 4x12, one day i was playing, and it just started to sound beyond amazing.....then....pow! flames shot out the back, i immediately shut it down, something blew out? i could find nothing, but the tremolo stopped working, although i wasn't even using it at the time, to this day i have no idea what it was?? The funny thing is, the amp still works completely fine otherwise, and still sounds great...they longer you play it, and the hotter it gets, the better the sound.

Some trem circuits have small transformers. One of those going meltdown would do that! And of course the caps and tubes associated with the trem circuit would likely go nuclear too! What did it smell like? A burning clutch, brakes and tires all in one big bonfire?

Great tone man. How much is the preamp bringing to the table though?

What did it smell like? A burning clutch, brakes and tires all in one big bonfire? It happened in 1999, so i can only remember the smell of that standard electronics frying if you know what i mean? What ever it was, i would be nice to capture that lightning in a bottle and be able to use it all the time..minus the shooting flames lol....then again, that would be awesome live 8)

Great tone man. How much is the preamp bringing to the table though? The preamp kept the amplifier growl and punch translating in the right place, when I start to chug on the D/dsus4 chord towards the end of the clip, the punch translated the best on the VP28.

Yep. Pure tone right there! I'd love to hear two tracks panned left and right. 57 into the Capi on one, 421 into a Capi on another! I can give you tips on mic'ing technique differences if you wish.... up to you!

I'm really struggling to upgrade my preamps. I have some mackie/presonus pres and I get good sounds with them but can't help but thinking what even an ISA 828 would do for my rig

I can tell you they make a big difference in keeping what your recording cohesive and real and almost with you in the room feeling. They are less sibilant and less muddy and masked, however a good engineer with good mic technique on a good sound source with good talent can make a passable recording.
For me my instruments and amps are so unique and special sounding I want to capture them as best I can so I have great mics, preamps, converters and a good room!

The Focusrite ISA428 Mark 1. You can get them used CHEAP! They don't make them anymore and the 428 Mark 2 series and the 828 are just not as good. There's something very special to the sound of the 428 Mark 1. It sounds like Focusrite, it sounds like Neve and it sounds like API. Depends on the gain level, pad, EQ tailoring etc. It's one of my faves. I have Neves, I have APIs and I have a ton of others (35 in total)... but it terms of flexibility and quality of sound, I love those 428 Mark 1s.

Hey Thanks Ward! I did not know this, I'm gonna keep my eye out for them. I figure even four decent pres would be enough. I use the Kemper for all my guitars so I really just need to get my kick, snare and Overheads through something a little nicer.
