I hate to say it, but I haven't heard a $1,200 mic yet that I preferred to a $3,500 mic. I wish I had.
I think the best thing to do in this case would be to have a talk with Shannon. He'll help you clarify your choices. He's not just trying to sell people something, he's been around long enough to know it's more important and better for his business in the long run that whichever way you go, it's the right thing for you.
Oh, and welcome to Real Gear !

Oh, and welcome to Real Gear ! I hear what you're saying, and more often than not I agree, but something kind of surprising happened to me yesterday regarding this comparison. Anyway I listened to the Stam Audio SA-87 vs the U87Ai, and I think I did somewhat strongly prefer the $800 mic to the $3,500 mic in this specific comparison. It's worth a listen anyway, stam has posted the files.

Cool.I'd love to hear some Stam Audio mic files! I'm curious about the Warm Audio WA87 too. If they've correctly modeled the earliest versions, it could be really interesting. Neumann is clearly charging for their name. The U87AI as they've made it should be more like $1,500- $2,000.
Monkeyxx, can you please post a link to the Stam files, I couldn't find them.

Guitar those were raw files and no context really for judgement.. Not to mention he admitted his SA87 models a vintage and the test compared the SA87 to an U87ai... Not apples to apples unfortunately... I think he even eq'd and compressed the files as well... If he put up a vintage u87 against the SA87 that would have been great to hear! Plus the SA87 is not component for component a vintage or Ai so its hard again to compare? How does the SA87 stack, how does it fair on Drum Room, gtr cab, Cello, piano m/s, x/y or spaced pair, a fiddle, multiple mic' d arrangements, multiple voices? See this is where even the 87 and even the Ai shines, it just works on a wide variety of sources and genres and takes eq really well to be molded into what you want... To get this performance, this took Neumann decades and decades of research and development and mic making.. I think the SA87 has all the potential to be a great mic, and I'm sure it will sound very good! However, like with the warm audio mic, I am not expecting the capsule to live up to the Neumann pedigree and that's why I have suggested replacing the capsules with authentic k67/87/870 depending on your clone's circuit/ revision if you want to take the mic all the way!

Makes sense ChaseUTB, but I guess we'd have to hear the Warm first before deciding about the capsule quality. It would be a treat if it really did stand up to the real deal.

How does 3u GZ251tube or fet compare to Bock 241 which has just been discontinued - I was considering Bock 241 to compliment my Beezneez Arabella(u47/m49), Mahalia (u67) & Samar AL39 vocal mics, and am now left with these mics to consider; Josephson c 715 or c716, or maybe Blue bottle - however if the 3u GZ251 overall sound quality isn't noticeably far below the Beezneez mics I already have, I would consider it to plug the gap ( C12/251) in mic types I have in the small vocal mic section of my locker Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. Take a look at Advanced Audio Microphones. I have their CM251 and it sounds amazing. Don't let the cost fool you. advancedaudio.ca/collections/tube-microphones/products/cm251
