I have it. It's unique, I'll give it that! Its greatwith a little automation on a bass that needs help only on certain notes. Q widths can be frustrating. A little goes a long way with the limited Q. Haven't de-essed with it...I'm hooked on Eliosis.

I can't really get the hang of the Eliosis deesser...
Anyway, I really think of Soothe and Surfer doing two different things. I think of Soothe as smoothing out the harsh upper frequencies...I use Surfer more for those resonant mid frequencies that move around depending on where the singer is singing. Sometimes I can get this kind've honky 800-1khz thing. I can find out where it is, click on surf and then adjust the surf parameter to that frequency...take some of that out and it follows that particular problem area around no matter what the top line is doing.

Smart. Eliosis is brilliant JK. Worth a little study to figure it out. I had to go beyond the presets to get it. It's not just a de-esser. It's an air eq too. The air boost can work interactively with the de-ess cuts. Also does a shelf with dip kind of thing...meaning you can adjust the shape of the filter pretty extensively. Took me a few minutes but I saved a couple good presets and it's quick now. I hate to think of a de-esser as a game changer...seems silly but it kind of is.

It does the same thing you're describing I think...My go-to de-esser has been the Pro-DS...I usually pull the controls to max and then move the adjustable frequency range around until I'm hearing the esses completely gone...then I back off. I can't seem to figure out a similar method with the EDS.

I've been using this de esser and really like it. Still on the presets though. Haven't dove into it much. I'll try to find a video for it to see if I can get some more out of it.
I've tried surfer eq and like it as well.

Try the eoisis on the main preset... but turn the second big knob (amount?) down to about 10% to 20% ... thats where it works for me
cheers

@johnkenn Johnkenn I started this thread, yet it doesn't appear in my "participated" feed. is there a time limit for when threads stop showing up in that participated list?

I downloaded the demo after reading about it on Pro Tools Expert and watching a video showing it at work. The demo does cut out audio every 30 seconds, but you can play around with it to see if it works for you. Will wait until there's a sale and then pull the trigger. I like that the interface now is cleaner and not trying to be skeuomorphic (resembling real knobs, etc.).

Here's a few elosis presets I made. A few of them are basic de-esser styles but a couple are unique filter shapes. At least I don't know another de-esser that will do them...though it probably exists. Anyway, I think you can drop these in your plug in settings folder in PT. Don't know about other daws. www.hightail.com/download/dDZIQ1ZpVnNIcWRvSWNUQw

Wanted to bump this again. Surfer EQ can be the exact thing that can chase around resonant frequencies. It has bailed me out a thousand times.

I am struggling with(read: about to have a mental breakdown regarding)some frequencies poking out on the bass guitar on several tracks I'm mixing for an album. Might SurferEQ be of help in this respect? Anyone used it for this?

I am struggling with(read: about to have a mental breakdown regarding)some frequencies poking out on the bass guitar on several tracks I'm mixing for an album. Might SurferEQ be of help in this respect? Anyone used it for this? Yes. Definitely. Here’s how I use it. Choose the most narrow Q and yank up the band and find the most offensive frequency or where the obnoxious frequency is happening. Note what that frequency is on the band you’re looking at. Now switch on “surf” and adjust it to that frequency. Now it should follow that frequency around...now just cut it out. I’ve noticed mine can be buggy in that I have to do that twice. The first time after I set it, it will jump up into the 2khz range after I hit play...so I just have to do it again and it works.
