Hey guys, I need to get a cheap interface that has optical in. I will be using it as a catch system for mixing. So, I would prefer it to have multiple sample rates. I won't be using the actual converters in the system. That is why I need it to have Optical in. What do you guys recommend?

I use this for mobile recording and it works pretty well. You'd probably want to get the updated version unless you're on a machine that's a few years old. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Scarlett18i6You'll probably have to get it used now since it's been replaced by two generations of 18i8 (two headphone outputs instead of one). ADAT in and SPDIF in/out. Sounds like it's in the ballpark you're looking for.

6i6 doesn't have adat. I have an 18i8 (which has adat). I used it with a SPDIF device. Worked fine at 48k, had issues at 96k for me. YMMV.

roger that. I use the s/pdif on my 6i6. I know zero about adat. (hmmmm... warning: digital joke alert soooooo, if I know zero about it, that means that I know 50% about it.........because its all ones and zeros.......lol

Used Motu or Focusbrite scarlet seam to be the best with and stable. Check the local pawnshops and Craigslist if it doesn't work you can probably sell it and break even!

So, you'll get a lot cheaper if you can use COAX SPDIF--the standard for 2 channel digital....you can hop on Craigslist and get some interface with SPDIF for <$100. New....sure the 6i6 mentioned above is $250 new---the only ones less expensive (new) will be locked at single rates. That seems to be about the going for a SPDIF having IO box other than some units locked at 48khz.
Optical SPDIF is an oddball--it mostly will be finding an interface with ADAT that will switch to optical SPDIF in software....and hoping it will do multiple sample rates. COAX SPDIF will do whatever rate the interface is advertised to do. 44 to 192. Optical SPDIF CAN....but, it's all in the implementation of those ADAT chips and the switching, I think.
So....if you meant you just need a digital in--switch your search to COAX and save time, money, and arguably fidelity.

I've got a functioning Alesis AI-1 that needs a new home, but that's probably not what you're after.....

Focusrite was my bet as well. They seem to be owning the cheap interface market segment. I use an 18i8.

I took the top off after I listened to it. I was really impressed. They did a nice job and for the most part used ok stuff in the box. It could be modded to sound better but it would take a lot of work and for my application it's not worth it. Now I need to just use it! haha
