To me the VP312 has sort of a big, wide open sound with extended top and bottom. The VP26 seemed to tuck things in and put a mid-forward sort of sound. Just a bit of a thicker tone. Ditto. For drums, I might go VP26 on snare/rack toms, VP312 for everything else.

Similar confusion here also.
I have 4x VP28's, plus Neve options and I tend to use SCA J99's for overheads.
In the past I was using SCA C84's for overheads but they can be too forensic if the drummer is a cymbal crasher and the J99's provide great detail with a less brittleness than the C84's.
The VP28's midrange punch and presence is great on snare (top and bottom) and also suits close kick and rack toms however I'm thinking of adding a couple of either VP312's or VP25's with their larger transformers for outside kick and maybe floor tom.
However outside kick and floor tom kind of already lend themselves to the darker, thicker Neve style pre's so I'm not certain whether a couple of VP25's will be much of an advantage over Neve's in these positions?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but here's what I've gathered on the general sound of the CAPI pres:
VP312 - Open sound, with big lows and highs VP25 - More midrange, same output xformer as 312 VP26 - Same circuit as VP25, but with smaller output xformer, more midrange VP28 - Same circuit as VP26, but with output fader from Missing Link
My questions are:
1. How does the Litz wire xformer affect the tonality?
2. How do the different opamps (gar2520 and gar1731, specifically) affect the tonality or attack?

Good luck!

I think the Litz makes the VP28 a little smoother in the mids. Maybe a little more open. I just did a bunch of tests with the VP28 Litz and Heider. The Heider is bigger on the very bottom and more extended on top. Maybe more "full spectrum." The VP28s seem to have more meat in the mids/lower mids and a little more rolled off in comparison. For my tastes, I preferred the VP28 Litz. Now, I could see where the Heiders could be super punchy on drums though. Bet hey would be fantastic.

So... out of the larger transformer CAPI's should I go for a pair of VP25's or VP312's to go with my 4x VP28's?

Good read. I am running KIcks through VP28's and snares and toms through VP26's although last session I ran overheads through VP26's

312's for me on everything. If I want a midrange sound (ala vp26) I put in gar1731.

I ordered a couple of VP312's to go with 4x VP28's. I'm kind of interested in modding one of the VP312's into a kind of Frank DiMedio clone using Jensen nickel transformers and 990 op amps.

I had the 312 a long long time ago. Remember it being really open. Might have to invest again.

I've gotta say - I started with a pair of VP-28's because of the flexibility to use them as line drivers as well as mic pres. I don't think I ever even looked at the 312 option. I think its time to order a pair and check them out. (after Jeff gets back from his well deserved time off)

I've had API 3124 vintage and new... Vp26's... Vp28's. Chandler Ltd-1 and tg2. I ended up trying a few different 500 series brands. In the end I sold all my various preamps and I've settled happily on VP28's and UTA preamps. For drums it's VP28's on all close mics usually driven a bit and UTA on overs and room as they have the extended top. I find the litz to be a bit more clear. I use them with red dots on kick in& out and snare top & bottom mics and the ea transformers with gar 1731/2520 on toms , crotch mic etc

Does anyone have drum samples they can share with the different preamps and options?

I started with two vp28s, and while they made my snare and 59 Champ sound unreal and better than they ever have, i next got the 312s and like them better overall. Very full and round whereas the vp28 can seem mid pointy. 312's are way more versatile and for my meager setup that's important. Now looking for two more 312s or an elysia xfilter for my last two slots.

Just about to start a pair of VP312 builds which I believe should have a bit more low end beef and high end air than the VP28's.
