vp26's on toms. SOMEtimes vp28's on OH, but that's happening less and less as of late..... vp28's on Snare SOMEtimes as well if I'm not looking for a weightier sound (Neve or Neve-ish).

Why the desire for different models on different drums? Just curious.

If I'm using only CAPI's then it's: VP25 and 28 on kick 25 on Toms 26 and 28 on snare 312's or 28's on OH's (depending on how much transient detail I need) 312's on Rooms
Lately it's been mixing in the silver bullet on OH's and throwing some UA 4-710 in there for a different flavor from time to time. I just picked up the RTZ, but i haven't had a chance to use it on drums yet.

That's what I'm wondering. Anybody want to describe the difference in sounds?

I'm in favour of using the same model of preamp on all of the drum channels, and I've just ordered 16x VP28 kits for this very purpose. I haven't tried any of the other CAPI models, but the VP28 is definitely the one that appeals to me the most because of the 2nd stage.

There's a whole thing about the difference in Transformers size and how that affects the sound. It's worth checking out the 312s and vp25s just for that compared to the VP 28.
The VP 28 has a really tight focused sound. The 312 and VP 25 sound a bit bigger on the bottom because they have larger Transformers.

My choice was dictated by what I have in a sense.
I have a number of Preamps, and through trial and error, I ended up with a selection based on what I liked.
I tried each preamp on each drum, different mic combinations, and found the ones I like best, out of what I had..
JLM Baby Animal BA2 Overheads, KM184 Mic JLM TG500 Kick, Audix D6 CAPI VP28 Snare, Beyer M201 JLM 99NV Floor Tom. Shure SM57 JLM NV500 Rack Tom, Senny MD421
With the kit being a Yamaha Oak Custom, and the cymbals being Mastersound hi hats and Zildjian cymbals
cheers

Oh the beauty of CAPI mic pre's! The most ginormous kick drum sound ever imo is the VP25 with the Litzwire transformer with a VF600 (Firlotte) Op amp. Really incredible on toms too. The VP28s are great too especially if you wanna drive them a little hard on snare.

Perfect timing on this thread. Was just driving trying to decide if my next capi should be something besides the vp28s I already have. I find them a little bright at times(though magic on snare and elec guitar). Could be the Litz in there? Wanted something fuller richer rounder. 312 my ticket?

Try the Heider FD312's. you know I did a side by side tryout with the new Sunset Sound reissue mic pres..They were good, very smooth and musical but for my taste the Heiders won. bigger, more alive punchier etc.

Four VP28's here and also wondering about a different CAPI flavour mainly for drums? Maybe something fatter ie. 312, VP25, VP26? I'm well covered in the Neve style Class A and Class A/B department so I don't really need anything too close to those.

Vp28 into the modded 1608 with lc53 for kick and snare. So are the CAPI pres a big improvement in comparison to the 512s (or are they 212s?) that were in the 1608?

I've never really even thought about it. I just take it as a given that they're better. I've never had a "mic pre moment" where I'm all stoked on the sound with the 1608. What I really dig about doing it this way is that I can drive the vp28 pretty hard (which you know sounds killer on Jeff's stuff), pull back the fader and then send it into the line in on the console, which has the Litz LC53 with Leibers amps in it. My 1608 has Litz transformers and Leibers amps in it too. By the time I get to tape or computer I've gone through quite a few EA transformers and Leibers amps. Especially if you count the insert path. I bring the signal in to the console semi low so I can push the fader up past zero and get some of the flavor of the fader amp. Short answer long. Sorry. What a blowhard. Short answer: VP28s blow the new API pres away. Smashed. Killed. Crushed. Destroyed.

Same as svart, 312 on everything. I'd like to add some VP28 channels, my answer will likely change after that, just having both on hand. I did an album with VP26 on overheads and it worked out fine.
To me the VP312 has sort of a big, wide open sound with extended top and bottom. The VP26 seemed to tuck things in and put a mid-forward sort of sound. Just a bit of a thicker tone.
I ultimately opted for the transparency of the 312 for my main channels, but I am extremely curious about the VP28, having never tried one.
I'll probably be adding more 312 channels also. Those and my N72 are my "works on everything" preamps.

I've had a difficult time making a CAPI choice as well. I'm looking for 8 channels for rhythm section duties, but I'm not sure what the preamp/opamp/transformer combinations with deliver.

I've had a difficult time making a CAPI choice as well. I'm looking for 8 channels for rhythm section duties, but I'm not sure what the preamp/opamp/transformer combinations with deliver. If you could narrow it down to 2 or 3, you could just try one of each and see which you prefer. Sell the other ones (possibly for a profit) and then fill out the rest from there with your favorite. That's sort of how I ended up with my 312s. Unfortunately there is really no pracical way to make this decision without using them in your own studio, or just making an "educated guess." Trying them is obviously the better option of the two, if you can manage.
