I have extensively rebuilt three Apex 460s. Two into U67/C12 territory, and the other firmly into 251 territory. It's one hell of a mod platform, and you can take it as far as you are willing to go. For that reason it's one of my favorite microphones. I learned a whole lot over the 4 years or so I have been working on them. The stock diaphragm is actually pretty good with the right circuit. For the 251 or a C12 obviously you'd want to change to a CK12 type of capsule, since it's the key to that kind of sound.
I found that the GE 6072A NOS tubes were distinctly superior to modern Chinese equivalents. I think you can also get some good mileage out of an upgraded output transformer.

The U67 fits me better than anything, but I like the Mictek here. I think it's very high quality. I've tried the Miktek at B&H in Manhattan though and had a different opinion then. They have a mic room with around 30 mics set up, and you can compare them with at least 6 different preamps. There, the Miktek I tried seemed a little flat compared to the Telefunken AK-47, AK-51, Soyuz 0-17 and a U87 I tried at the same time.

Holy sh*t. Those look amazing. Love the black plated grilles on the 251s.

Yep... all 4 mics have NOS tubes and some have cap upgrades... Shannon's capsules sound just so super stellar and everything else is just inches compared the MILES his capsules provide. I will give these a workout soon so far I have just tried them as overheads on drums as a super quick down and dirty test so far just amazing. The 251 is so frigin good and reedy in the mids, the 67 is amazing in the high end , not harsh, more deliberate in the mids(British LOL) so to say and so solid and together sounding. The 251 is very vintage, not a c12 sound but more of that smooth vintage true 251 in your face 3D thing. These kill my KM184's and U87's... just destroy everywhere so far.

I don't get a dime from Miktek ( I wish ) But U really cant go wrong with a Cv4 or a cv3 I know they are very dependable and simply a great entry mic as well as awesome modded . Lol the 67 mod on that thing is very nice as well... When I Tef each one before they left I was very surprised how really incredible close they were in sound. The Ami transformer are great sounding it's a very good package no matter the level ur at ...

Btw - I need to post some samples since Shannon completely rebuilt the capsule.
