Open up a logic project
split a track somewhere into a 1 bar region.
Hit "i" your keyboard to open the INSPECTOR on the left of the screen.
You will see a check box, called? GAIN. You tick the check box, and then adjust the gain amount.
Very handy for De-essing, and quick levelling of a track.
This happens before anything you instantiate in the track plug in wise.
cheers

I level automate lead vox for inflection and emotion, which the waves plug doesn't do. But I'm mostly doing my own vocals. It seems to be working for Wiz. His vocals come across fine. Although I did ride/automate his on the track we mixed last year.

The way to go to make everyone happy is to clip gain to taste - put the Vocal Rider before the compressor - have the VR write the automation (pre-fader) - then either automate the main track fader for inflection and emotion, etc. OR edit the VR automation for same.

I rarely automate anything. If I were to, I'd automate the fader after the repressor.

I use a lot of clip gain in Cubase. Haven't tried the Rider plugins yet.

Am I the only one who fixes things in PT using clip gain? It's okay if I am I track with minor compression on the way in, clip gain the balance to the entire track a bit while I edit and comp the vocal and then insert the compressor of choice at mix, which lately has been the RS-124. Print and it lays beautifully with the music.

I cannot speak for other DAW but clip gain in PT is pre processing where volume automation is post processing on audio tracks, instrument, aux, and VCA tracks. Master fader volume automation is pre processing and will affect your levels into plugins if they are on your master fader.

I find Vocal Rider useful - I use it before the main vocal compressor(s) it seems to give the vocal a polished performance dynamics wise.
Sometimes I don't use it if I want the vocal to jump out a bit and be more dynamic and personal, I think VR is a great tool to have available.

On sale at waves.com for $29. Hang on to your wallets. The sale season is starting early this year. It has literally taken all my willpower to resist the Waves SSL deal for $200. Smoking price, but I have an IK SSL strip already, Cytomic The Glue (SSL) buss comp, plus a pile of hardware, including 2 SSL style buss compressors...fighting the urges!

After using this stuff literally for decades, I have to keep it fun! But watching faders move is so soothing and hypnotic!😎

Pregain automation. I ride the vocals into the compressors - usually ReaComp or my RNC followed by Variety of Sound's Density or VBL, or maybe an LA2A clone. After that I can ride the volume independently, but those will be macro adjustments by section to keep pace with the track.
If I'm compressing while tracking then I'll follow the same method but I'll just be a little more conservative with my gain reduction.

Anyone using Wave Rider by Quiet Art? It's supposed to be a vastly superior product as Vocal Rider was created as sort of a knock off of an early WR version. I use WR on all my instrument and vocal tracks along with PT clip gain and compressors. It doesn't allow for drastic volume changes unless you manually edit the automation, so I end up doing those sort of things with clip gain even though it's pre-processing. Hand editing with a mouse doesn't appeal to me at all. Maybe if I had a Faderport or something similar I'd try some extra fader riding, but I'm not dissatisfied with the results of my current method.
