Literally. Then I could have all my plugins installed and ready to go on all of my machines/drives, plug in my iLok, and be good to go.
I ran a session last week at another studio. I have a system hard drive that I bring with me. I show up, pop out his drive, pop mine in, and I've got Pro Tools my iLok plugins ready to roll. The problem is that my rough ITB mixes used some plugins that aren't iLok, so they can't be on that machine too. Having all of them available via iLok would be much more convenient.
Sorry haters. iLok 4 president!

I thought politics were verboten. OK. I'll be a hater. I get (kind of) why you like it. But the very idea of a central corporate entity controlling everyone's access to all of their pluggy stuff makes me cringe. You young whippersnappers with your InstaFaceTime connected lives don't think twice about setting up your next account and giving up your personal info to the coming singularity. Next thing you know we'll all have an iLok chip embedded in our brains.. resistance will be futile. I'll never vote for iLok, even if I have to switch parties. Besides, it doesn't take much to envision a future where your portable HD has everything ready to go, does it?

I'm with Jesse on this one 90% of the working pros I know love Ilok! The portability simplicity and with the investment in zero downtime service is great!
As far as all your plugs tied to one company, well your still at the mercy of your DAW vendor an OS so what's one more? When a problem rears its ugly head, its great when all you need to do is make one phone call!

I've had a few very serious issues using iLok. On at least three occasions, it completely locked me out of opening my own sessions. One time I had a 14 day plugin demo, I actually bought the plugin on the 12th day I had the demo, but after the 14 day period expired, ILok saw it as my 14 day trial period was finished, and shut me down as if I was trying to use an unauthorized plug. If it just disabled the plug that would have been fine, but it wouldn't allow me to even open the session. One of those times I had a deadline for a client. That was deeply personal and intrusive, I felt locked out of using my own property by a machine. One of those glitches took two days to uncover and remedy. One time it just stopped working, so I had to wait for a new one.
I understand and respect developer's need for protection, but frankly, I think iLok is terribly flawed.
I'd be in trouble too, if I tried to bring an almost finished mix to a studio that didn't have the same plug-ins. Most times, I'd bet the studio has plenty of viable, perhaps better alternatives. Also, with UAD you can bring a satellite to use their plugs, Slate uses ilok, and most of my other plugs are native, so I could theoretically bring most of what I used on a mix with me. Still, I know it isn't perfect.

Yep, agreed. The steinberg key pisses me off the most cause it only stores licenses from Steinberg. Somedays, I feel like getting rid of all these keys and just cracking everything I legitimately own so I can dump the USB Hub I'm tied to.

Yeah, well I wish NOBODY used iLok and it suffered a slow painful death and its inventors would just go away and think of some other sort of torture device for some other industry.
So there...
