It was a terrible deal even back when they came out with it and tried to pass it off as a LDC.. It's just one of their cheap SDCs in a large body.

poor website jokes aside -
These 990XL's have a 32 mm capsule, is that not LDC territory?

They might have changed them, but the original 990 was definitely a small capsule.. The same one they used in the 991 and the 603 stuff.. It's a decent capsule, but it's not a LDC. The 990 capsule vs. a real 34mm-ish capsule.. I'm assuming the brass ring around the 17mm capsule is to make it *look* larger when viewed through the mesh.. recordinghacks.com/microphones/MXL/990

ha! isn't that something. I know this is the XL, I got one on a whim a while back. That brass ring trick is almost as dastardly as those led's under the tubes so that they "glow"

This reminds me a little of when I used work for an audio/video gear retailer back in the 1980's. We were sent a demo stereo system system which included a pair of 3-way speakers fitted with removeable grilles. The system was fairly cheap but the boxes were actually a 3-way (4 speaker system) fitted, 2x 8" woofers, 1x mid and 1x tweeter. We gave the thumbs up to head office and ordered 20 of these systems but as soon as they arrived and the truck was unloaded, the vendor demanded cash on delivery but as we only do 30 day payments we told him we don't do COD. I took another look at the speakers and noticed that on these speakers the grille cloth and surrounding frame wasn't removeable unlike the demo models we were sent. Although I could just make out the 4 'speaker's through the semi transperant grill cloth I smelt a rat. I took a screwdriver and despite protests from the vendor I pried off the front grilles and voila! The boxes were fitted with a single, cheap 8" twin cone speaker and the other 3 'speakers' were simply graphics painted onto the front baffle. We cancelled the order and refused to pay the vendor who threatened us with a lawsuit as we sent him on his way. The last we heard an opposition retailer had listed them in their Christmas Specials catalog!
