Well, my Big Knob is serving me well and is starting to get some sticky buttons...so I get it: make an updated version of a thing a lot of people have and will eventually wear out.
But, damn, do they have to be so obvious?

This new Behringer piece has some USB functionality. Seems like a built in AD/DA?

I wish they would copy a neve pre or sta level or la2a That's what GAP is for, no? 500 bucks for an LA3A, LA2A not far behind, 200 bucks for a neve clone.. doesn't get much cheaper, plus behringer would surface mount the whole thing!

But, damn, do they have to be so obvious? I'm a huge fan of my big knob (Heyyo). I guess if you don't do any real recording, it could be used as your V.I. AD/DA while you make dance pop explosions. It's a good feature that the big knob would be good to have. At the end of the day, this thing is 150 bucks vs 300, and electrical tape could remove that behringer logo pretty quick..
They have access to midas tech now, so maybe they have learned a bit?

The big knob has a bad reputation for actual sound quality and transparency. Could this actually be higher quality, plus the USB DAC, for a much lower price?
By the way, it obviously has a DAC, is there some indication I'm missing that it has an ADC?

It seems to be okay for Trent Reznor, good enough for me then.
It says it has i/o, but I'm not sure. Line ins may be on the USB chip architecture so they utilize it?

I guess we'll have to wait and see the detailed documentation. It's not obvious by looking at the controls and the I/O of the box itself. Still, for $150 the amount of functionality in this unit is amazing.

LOL .... am I way older than you guys.
Behringer of old would of literally copied the Big Knob so that it looked like a "photocopy" of a Big Knob - does anyone remember the Behringer Euro Desk and the Mackie 24/8 - I think Mackie took legal action agaisnt Behringer over that product.
Compared to that these days Behringer are bordering on innovative! .... OK I'm stretching a bit, but still this isn't a direct clone like they used to do.
Thinking about that I own a Wunder CM7, BAE 1073 and Retro STA Level ..... they kinda look identical to the original designs! (although I realise that's a different kettle of fish)

Because of that series of lawsuits, I'm actually surprised they went and copied yet another Mackie product.
It's interesting because Mackie's outlook from the start (according to interviews I have read) was Mackie wanted to produce low cost high quality gear. Behringer's bar was JUST a little lower - low cost gear.
Now they're cash rich and finally making products people want, which you can thank that R&D budget for. Buying Midas was a really good idea, as they were a quality company that made stuff people respect. I will always give anyone a 14th chance, and there isn't any other monitor controller for 150 bucks brand new.

The Behringer is probably better and even if it isn't? The big knob is actual dog shit in terms of build quality and sonics I can't imagine anything much worse than it. Save another $100 and get the NOS McOne and at least you have a passive monitoring controller that isn't compromising the listening environment. The Central Station is also alright but again, really lousy build quality and not in the same price range as any of the others I've mentioned.

I use a Big Knob for my writing rig, I've had it for years and it's been very reliable and appears to me to actually be perfectly well built considering it's cost. I have a Crane Song Avocet on my mixing and mastering rig and whislt it is obvioulsy on a different level to the Big knob in terms of design and build approach I can honestly say that the difference isn't massive. Yes the Avocet has a great D/A and a stepped attenuator and has a clearer sound and better stereo imaging, but still I find the Big Knob to be of decent quality and I think it punches above it's weight. I just felt I need to defend the BK as it's sometimes get's a bit of an unfair wrap.

Fair enough, I've defended lots of gear in my time and am of the mindset that most things these days are great whether analog, digital, vintage or new but the BK stands out to me as a dud. Maybe I had a bad one and like I stated earlier, there are far better options that are more affordable. It's not like I'm saying "buy an Avocet" I'm saying save yourself $100 and get a McOne and you'll be much better off.
