RE20.
Pretty neutral sounding kick mic, shallow kick drum. Snare hit with the butt end right in the center too.
Probably the biggest contributions to the sound your hearing on a lot of this stuff.

Hehe, funny, they taped the tweeter of the NS-10m away....? "It does not have bass, so why should it have highs?!". Just mids along with the main speakers? Nice idea, never saw this...or just blown?

Paper on the tweeter was Bob Clearmountain's trick!
Basically he taped one sheet (square) of toilet paper over the NS-10's tweeters. After mixing for a few hours, when your ears might have been fatigued, he would then peal off the first layer of toilet paper to allow a bit more high end to come thru.. And then would continue mixing...

Listening to the drums in the room, they sound terrible. The kick sounds like a wet paper bag, Ringing snare and toms, no tone. In the control room the console E.Q. and kepex units totally shaped the sound. What happened to getting the sound at the source.

I agree with your view, my though was, if they could make that clunker kit sound even that good, imagine a nicely tuned quality instrument? that board sounds pretty kickbutt.

This might be a bit off topic, but the Sound City connection is there:
