This is a piece of an interview with my buddy Boo Ray who is putting out a record we did last year. I thought it was such a cool insight and there ain't NOBODY at my house who gives a damn. Hahaha.
Anyway, I thought it was nice.
"The money could have paid his next few months’ living expenses, he says, but rather than waste the cash on frivolities like food, he headed to Los Angeles to record with producer Noah Shain on an Ampex 2-inch tape machine — the same one on which Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline was recorded. Ray went into White Buffalo Studio with a dream team of a band, including drummer Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), bassist Paul Ill (Christina Aguilera, Gov’t Mule), and twin background vocalists Todd and Troy Garner (Lenny Kravitz, The Seventh Hour). The musicians recorded with everyone playing and singing together in a room, with only baffles and Persian rugs for sound separation. The result is a very raucous and live-sounding album that brought out Ray and the other players’ best, he says.
“You could absolutely tell the difference,” he says. “It’s not just about the tape machine. It’s about the relationship the producer has with the tape machine. Basically, the tape machine and producer are another band member. That’s how impactful it is. ... You respond differently to what you’re hearing in your earphones, so the band plays different. It’s almost metaphysical.”

Nice. <thumbsup>> I totally get it about nobody at home caring. LOL But the tape machine being a band member and metaphysicall? Haha! I guess I lost my soul about a decade ago when the MCI rolled out the door. Don't miss it. I guess I've gone to the dark side.....

Makes them feel like they're doing something special...bring in their A game. I do like the sound of that old machine but it's a beast to run! I always have to do a few hybrid or ITB projects after a tape record...just to decompress!

Great blurb my man, it proves the job of the producer is to work in a way that brings the most out of the assembled talent! If it's tape its tape! BUT you have to let them know the realities as well!

I can remember the anticipation and nerves before a tracking date with 5 of your top level peers. Always brought a level of tension to a project that was often magical - and sometimes catastrophic. LOL But yeah, those days are mostly gone, and I do miss em. Now it's : "can you comp a few of my takes and make a good one" or "can't you just fly that into the other choruses".

They're not gone at White Buffalo! I like just about everything about recording to this MM1000 except the extra $$ it costs. I don't mind the time...that is a nice feature. I miss the rewind time in a DAW session. I don't make any claims about sound...that's a debate I can't participate in. I just like it. In controlled amounts. I just posted a record in the work board that was done mostly live to tape. Horns and choir and a whole mess of noise and distortion. It's pretty fun. Tape is dead. Long live Ampex!!

One of these babies? First multitrack I ever had. That thing was a beast. I miss it even less than I miss the JH24. LOL Forget punching in or locating easily. But yeah, did sound great. Noisy though.

If I would just leave the damned tracks alone at mix time I'd probably be winning Grammys 😉 It weighs 700 lbs

Lots of "non-linearities". Ha! No kidding. Those were the days. My grammy came on an MCI though. Maybe if I'd kept the Ampex I'd have more. LOL
