Happen to be lucky enough to have the GREAT "Augie Meyers" in my place all this week!
He's cutting tracks for a new release due out later this year.
My buddy, Frank Carillo, & his band the "Bandoleros" are backing him up on this album, as well as a live show this weekend in a local venue. Very cool. He's one of the greats!
We started today at 12 noon, and we got five songs done by 5 pm!
Yeah baby. Now that's the way to Rock n Roll.
So now, the band and I are headed down to "BarFunGul" to tip a few pints of Belgian ales after a long day of tracking! Ha.
You know, everyonce in a while, this biz is very, very, cool !

Way to go, Paul. Glad to see you rocking the Radar and still using the TL Audio board.

Thanks Wiz... Trust me, It's nothing special, But after 44 years in this business, (and 6 studio's later) I've made sure it's a smooth running operation, and more importantly it feels like home for all the musicians that come here.
Hey Key, I've used nothing but Radar since I purchased my original unit in 96 (I think that was the year?) Then went on to buy 5 more!
After my move to the new place and only one room, I'm still rocking 3 at the moment!
Quite frankly, in my opinion, there isn't a easier to use, more reliable, better sounding recorder available on the market today. Radar let's me concentrate on recording, and never worry about anything else but the artists and musicians in the room. Greatest thing since tape!

I'm about to start working with Jeff Hedback to design my new place, and we're thinking a one room conversion.

Man Paul, as I was loading up the car with local brews up in central WI after my Summerfest pilgrimage ( throw in Tony Levin with PG and Sting) and I kept thinking of you and the pub ! You just have all the fun my friend!

Eric baby.. Trust me, it's a hell of a lot of work running a studio, and then a pub afterwards... Haha Especially when I get up about 5 am everyday! But the clients love it, even the ones (as in Augie's case) that don't drink~!
No matter, I wouldn't trade these long days for anything else in the world.
And you mentioned "Tony Levin" I actually got to give him a call when I head up to Woodstock sometime next week. He still owes me a dinner!

Indie, As you can expect, there are positives, and negatives, to a "One Room Studio" type of setup. Most of them are obvious. That being said, the biggest negative in my place is having the drums in the same room, with no isolation other then the 14 custom made "gobos" I have surrounding them. Not as far as getting or achieving great drum sounds, as that s a breeze. I record a minute or two, play back and adjust accordingly. Really not a big deal. Everything happens quite quickly.
But, while tracking live acoustic instruments & drums, which I do often, It's pretty hard to keep a slammin drummer out of everything else. A very specific choice of mic's as well as a good understanding of their polar patterns is a MUST if recording this way.
The other major problem recording this way is loud speaker cabs. But in my case I overcame that hurdle with three ISO Boxes, that are housed in my basement, totally isolating guitar and bass sounds from my room! Works a charm.
That being said, my clients, and I mean, artists / bands, that have recorded with me in my old space for 27 years, and then have recently recorded here in my new (little) one room setup, have unanimously said they like the one room setup better. And I have to tell ya, except for no isolation for the kit, I would have to totally agree. Sessions happen quickly, and the interaction between band members. & myself is instant and amazing! I have this place so tweaked, things happen literally in minutes instead of hours.

Eric, Artist studio cans are mostly Fostex T-20's.. I had 35 of these in my old place, and all of the surviving phones came with me here when I moved.
Probably still have 25 or so. Beside them I have about 8 assorted other cans, and they are, the "ISO" phones, and a few ATM-50's.
As for me personally, when I track I use ISOLATION phones made by KAT. They are really, really comfortable, and sound pretty damn good for fully closed back ISO phones. But if not tracking live in the room, for reference I use Sennheiser HD 600's, 650's and Grado RS-1's that I love.

Just finished another day of tracking.. 4 more songs done today in 4 hours! Very cool.
Will post a few pics of the guitars Frank Carillo used today, as well as the Upright bass mic setup for Karl Allweier. The mic's for Karl's bass was a Coles 4038 on top, to get the high end of the bass positioned up, aiming at the fingerboard, and a Neumann FET-47 down low near the "F" holes, for the low end. Both of these mic's are phased checked, and summed on my console, sent thru a Distressor & or the ADL 670 to Radar. Plus Karl has a beautiful pickup (not sure what the hell it is) that I use into a Evil Twin DI box, which acts as a mic pre, directly into Radar.

They were just the right combination of build Quality , Price and not sucking! I remember pleading with Fostex at least 3 times not to discontinue those things ! We would buy them by the pallet ! Love the Grados and the HD600's just different beasts!

After sessions today, Frank Carillo & The Bandoleros, along with Augie all went downstairs to the Studio's Pub. "BarFunGul", to rehearse for Friday & Sundays's shows.
It was a wonderful day!
Attached is a pic of the guys afterwards...
