I am loving my DIY kits recently. The CAPI VP312 and VP28 are knocking me out, and my Hairball Gold and Copper are just stunning. The Copper is a take on the Neve 1290 preamp(of 1073 fame). They elected to chase the tone rather than just use the old schematic and new components. I compared it to my Vintech 573(a nice USA-made 1290 copy) and the Copper had a touch more vibe and low end. The Vintech seemed slightly tilted towards the top in comparison. Both are great, but I'd like to make my own here and save some $, so Hairball wins hands down there. I also prefer the tone of the Copper. Those Ed Anderson transformers that CAPI and Hairball use are great. The Copper has a punchy low end. Where as the CAPI/API sound seems to be somewhat lean and mean and punchy in the mids, the Copper seems to be more vibrant and smooth in the mid range, while it punches in the lows more. Overall a bigger sound. Both are incredible and have their place in my studio. The Hairball Gold has that extra clarity, and larger than life kind of sound. Not excessively, but it's there. It's still quite musical with the Jensen transformers though. The Copper has the vibe, almost low mid growl and guts. Here are some acoustic sounds of the Copper using my Peluso p67 mic on a Yamaha dread. Hairball Audio Copper Acoustics

Here are the Gold and Copper in A/B format. I did not push either unit. The Copper can be pushed a bit more than I did here for more color. Hairball CopperHairball Gold

I preferred the gold on that source.

I preferred the gold on that source. It has a little more open top, more true transient response and quite a bit less saturation all around. I can't really pick my favorite in this scenario because they are both so nice. However there is something just so stunning about the Gold on acoustic with it's true yet big and musical representation.

Any more impressions on the Hairball preamps ? Did you have a chance to compare the Copper to a real Neve ?
Cheers Peter.

I love the copper --- all vocals have been going through it. It replaced an SCA n72 for me. Not necessarily better, but I prefer 500 series and sold my SCA rack after I started using the copper....

Any more impressions on the Hairball preamps ? Did you have a chance to compare the Copper to a real Neve ? Cheers Peter. Sorry, no real Neve's around :/ The Copper is fun, though. It's not a straight clone, so it's probably less like a Neve than the clones. I think it sounds great and vibey, though. There is less of the harmonics or oscillation or whatever it is up top on the Copper than my Vintech 573s. Both are great for different things. Sometimes I like that ringing top on the Vintech for acoustics and such. Other sources maybe not. It's an ever so slightly cleaner less sparkly top on the Copper.
