What is this? I'm getting e-mails from Waves telling me that my Update Plan will expire in a few weeks - and they want $72.20 for "Coverage." for three of their plugs that I have. Is this some kind of extortion? They don't even explain what "coverage" means.

So assuming they don't make any upgrades to the plugs - basically I get nothing (and only for a year). Heck I"m pretty sure I paid less than 70 dollars in total for 2 of them between vouchers and sale prices.

Welcome to the world of ongoing plugin subscription fees coupled with forced upgrades courtesy of Micrapple and your DAW provider!

Please read c. a.) Welcome to the world of real gear aka hardware. b.) You are giving money away with zero intrest and you never get it back, we hope you feel good. c.) Search for some similar plug in by the Waves competiton and sell all your Waves plug ins. Do it before your old WUP expires otherwise they force you to buy it, because without an actual WUP you are not aloud to sell them. My Rant to the topic: People should know about WUP before they hit the buy button. I bet they wont hit the button. The first time it feels like Waves is sneaking behind your back.... I sold my Waves SSL bundle the day they wanted to have another 112$ on top, 5 years before it was 200$ In the same time I did pay lesser than 312$ in maintenance all my hardware. Hardware lasts forever; its yours. Hardware makes trouble too, but you do not have the feeling you hire something. My hardware has a better value as all the plug ins over the years. I wasted hours with updating this and that. Hardware just goes to my tech and I am done with it. To me Hardware is the better deal.

I like Waves. Firstly, they were the first to go 64 bit and they implemented it flawlessly. They have superb customer support. I've had them solve some Cubase problems for me. They went to their eLicenser and I've never had a problem with it, while I constantly have iLok problems. All their plugins have gain controls. So, if you overload the plugin you can back it off. I didn't have to pay thousands like I did with UAD for my Quad, only to be told that I needed to use them at a certain buffer size. Secondly, sometimes my UAD plugins stop working if I use too many, even though my UAD meters don't show I'm overloading them.
That being said, I'm not going to pay the WUP this year, as I don't see any major changes in the next couple of years like the move to 64 bit, but Waves is a very good company.

Yeah - I can see that there could be a (nominal) fee for an upgrade, but not to move the installation ..and certainly not an annual fee. I like their bass and vocal riders as time savers, but most everything else I have by them can functionally be duplicated by what's stock in logic, so now that they're hitting me up for money for plugs I already have I guess I don't see myself buying any additional plugs, and that's their loss. On the other hand, I can't say how pleased I have been with Logic, how inexpensive it was out of the blocks and the quality of its plugs, not to mention the fact that I haven't spent a dime in the last 3 or so years for one upgrade to my DAW, and there have been plenty of them. Otherwise, mrholmes points are well taken. I''ve picked up some nice mic pres and a couple of Warm comps as of late and I love them. I also love knowing I'll never have to pay for an upgrade for my hardware ..well maybe a tube here and there.

My point is that I did pay a lot for plug ins in the past without getting what they claimed in marketing. There is more than one reason to not invest in plug ins only.... I like some of the plug ins special those ones made in the past 5 years. I understand that software companies need to make a living, but charging me 1/3 of the original purchase for going to 64 BIT.... no thanks. I sold the Waves bundle and did got the SSLs included in the Native Komplete Bundle on top for free....
