If the hardware sounds anything like the emulation I would ask them if they lost their minds....

I never got the Culture Vulture. Would like to hear something good it was used on. I'm all ears.

I have a Thermionic Culture Rooster that has the Attitude section from the CV. I use it pretty regularly on Drum Buss.

mrholmes, everyone else thinks it sounds terrible. I wasn't being sarcastic when I said to post a video about it.

Ha ha, it never stops amusing me that audio/sound is soo subjective. I love mine! They are the red limited mastering versions though. Great on paralel drums or mix for a bit of a sparkle. And I was a little bummed that I got the decapitator to sound fairly close. Fairly.
Edit: Sorry guys, I missed a 'small' detail in the topic. Haven't tried the SW..

HA, really, we found someone who like the CV. Obviously people have very different opinions about it. I did not get why anybody would buy one, from the start. My first thought when i saw an early "promo" type of video for the culture vulture was: "WTF? Are they kidding? No? No joke? They mean it? What do they want for "this"? Nonono...."

I think we should all chip in and buy a hardware Culture Vulture for Jim Williams to stick across his mix bus 🤓

A recent client we recorded raved about the Culture Vulture and almost convinced my studio partner to get one.
I'm not so sure myself from the demos I heard.
It seems it's being sold as an antidote for ultra clean audio.
We already have plenty of transformers and tubes and a Sansamp for additional grunge when we want it.

I was like even my tube screamer does nicer distortion atrifacts than this.

I remember watching the video UAD put together, which was well done and great fun. I din't get it then either, the guy kept going further and further into some really crappy sounds and was getting more and more excited the shittier the sound got.

Yes, it was a great idea and well executed. UAD took a chance having some fun with their products rather than being typically serious. Unfortunately, that thing didn't seem like a must have by a long shot. The 1073 video was a blast too, and that's a well done plugin.

I think distortion is very subjective too. I like some of the soundtoys decapitator distortions...but not crazy about the Klanghelm. Same with the Vertigo unit they came out with. Don't get it. Sometimes I like the studer plug. Or the UA 610...

He works or is subcontracted by UA, I remember seeing him do some UA namm shows maybe it was messe but ya he is a producer and engineer and I wonder how much UA paid for this I mean he did call them " buffins at UA " which I translated to " buffoons " after the smile he gave. Sibilance from the v/o is rough for me in the vid! Why doesn't UAD take their plug Demos seriously? I remember seeing the 1073 demo "add" and couldn't help but think it was a few steps away from Slates "Pensado plugin" April fools vid! Not for $300 + no thanks! Acoussssssssstic gtrs :@
