I just got the UAD Oxide Tape plugin. I have the UAD ATR-102, and I already had a Waves bundle with a couple of tape plugs, but I just liked the sound of the Oxide on the UAD demos. I had coupons worth $75, and it's on sale for $99, so it was a no brainer.
It uses less DSP than the Studer or Ampex, so hopefully, I can get away with a few more instances in mono on a few tracks. Next time I start a new project, I'll use it on all the drums, just to try. It was late, and I was using headphones. I put it on a bass track and lead vocal track. The bass came way closer to what I wanted, so it's already worth having for that alone. It seemed the lead vocal was a little fuller too.
So, although I've only used it for maybe.. two minutes, it seems to sound really good and really easy to use. I'll try more tomorrow and post my impressions.
Any one else using Oxide yet?

I think it's better than the other two...can add thump and also a midrange push.

I like oxide a lot. Sounds great. UAD Ampex is incredible, but is a Dsp hog. Oxide is best of both worlds for Dsp vs sound

If you know how to use the Tone Boosters Reel Tape (20$) you can get some very intresting sounds from it. I do not care if it sounds like the real deal I use it because I like it.

Funny you should say that John, I kinda sorta feel the same way, but hesitated to just say it.
I have the UAD Ampex, and use it on my mix bus on every track I've done. It's really a beautifully done plugin, and helps with smoothing out tracks a lot, .... but.... the Oxide sounds so much more like tape sounded to me when I was using it, it kinda spooked me a little. Perhaps they just got something right in the tuning of the plug, but it's the first tape plugin I've heard that actually sounds like tape. I have a few Waves tape sims, and they're really just EQ curves with some saturation.
I didn't really like UAD's Studer so much, it felt heavy handed to me, and found Slate's was even more so, but the Oxide works like a charm.
I just put it on 3 or 4 tracks of a mix of a song I'd co-written last year with a friend, but left unfinished, and it made the electric guitar sound like a "record" , and the lead vocal was just fuller and smoother on all frequencies, not just the low end.

I agree the UAD tape sims sound more life like than any of the other ones I tried. I only have Ampex currently but Oxide is on the sort list. Seems perfect for tracks, tracking. Most of the other brands I wouldn't even want to use. Seems like a hard one to get right.

Im looking forward to printing with it to see how it all fits together. I'm not starting any new projects for a little while, so it'll have to wait..
