I often get my bass performances in the can, through a DI. Then rent an old Fliptop and re-amp them all in a couple hours. That thing sounds real, real good.

Acoustic 220 amp & flatwound strings on a fender jazz bass... Always a wonderful combo. Now when I hear regular strings like rotosound swing 66s (which I played for years,) it all sounds like Seinfeld.

I can't tell you how many people over the years have asked about bass tone on this or that record as "what kind of chain do you think...." only for me to find out they're using round wounds and giving recorded examples of flatwounds. Like what made the difference is tape....or some Neve channel....it would be like someone with a Precision w/flats asking what DI they should use to get that Seinfeld bass sound!!

Ha, and more like what midi controller did they use. The Seinfeld cues sound like that '80's 360 Systems bass module.

I think the Seinfeld bass was just a preset on the trusty old Yamaha DX-7. Remember, it was still kind of new then.

I believe Seinfeld was a Korg M-1 which was very popular at the time. The DX7 is more synthetic, the M1 uses samples as the sound source. I wish I had an M1 I'm rocking a DX7 right now. I am missing out on the Rompler sounds although obviously Omnisphere 2 is very powerful on the PC. I just miss the hardware for some reason.

yeah, Google says it's an M1....ok--so, my point can be made even stronger by my poor choice of repeated example....source....and in the bass world, strings are UUUUGGEE. And flatwounds were very typical until the 80s....and then have grown more popular in recent years in realization that they CAN fight you in digital.
I like worn out rounds....in fact, my fave string at the moment are the EB Cobalt flats BECAUSE they kinda sound like worn out rounds in tone with the punchy dynamics of new strings. Anyway....

Funny how I keep seeing Korg M-1's for cheap they need the Seinfeld bass tag! The Alembic pre also had a balanced path for the Alembic basses as well .

I have Labella low tensions on the old Precision. My high tension ones are the old Fenders--I think the set that came on the bass whatever 15 years ago, so you KNOW those flats rock now!!
I find the traditionals are too limiting for an only bass. But, I prefer that kind of In-between tone where you listen and you're not sure....are they old rounds or flats?

Anybody find any tape wound strings that they like? I've been wanting to give that a try.
The flats on my '65 Jazz have to be pushing 10 years old now. I love that sound. There was a time where I liked the Roto Swing Bass rounds on that bass. For the alternative rock I was doing at the time they were awesome live. I was never happy with them for recording....but playing out with them made me smile.

Things you never hear one guitar player ask another: "How many years old are your strings? Do you boil them often?"
