This tone around 1:00...is that more characteristic of a Jazz Bass? I'm kinda clueless when it comes to bass sounds...but I know I definitely like it. Says it's a Lakland Bass, but it's kind've the snarl I've attributed to Jazz Basses.

My vote is for the Zod but I also have a LaChapell 583s with a Telefunken tube that kills on bass even better than my LaChapell 992eg if there's a way you should try the 583s with the Telefunken tube But my next free money is going to Dan for a Zod

MusicMan. The Laklands I ever played tried to meet Stingray and Jazz Bass half way with the active H/S config....I mean no, Lakland probably sells more Fender knockoffs that their original designs, but...

Considering my bass playing skills, I will only need 3 strings...lol. So, I'm leaning cheap, here.

Considering my bass playing skills, I will only need 3 strings...lol. So, I'm leaning cheap, here. Ignore the DI, then. The best DI for an inexpensive bass is a SansAmp, IME/O. But, there are plenty of MM style bass knockoffs, too. Including their own Korean (I think?) "Sterling by Music Man" line. I was simply using those clips as "this is what a Music Man sounds like....this is what non repro Lakland sounds like"....to point out that's what I call snarl in a bass tone.

I'm wondering if my primary issue is just the cheap instrument. Although, I bet someone that knew what they were doing could make it sound great. Bass has just kind've been the red-headed-stepchild of my concern when doing demos...

I want a Jazz bass. I have a Precision in my closet. I hate Jazz bass necks, too thin at the nut for my liking, but the sound is just fuller, with longer sustain to me.
I did a demo 20 years back with a friend's early 60's Jazz bass, plugged right into a 16 track 1" tape machine. I was in a office and just the machine was available, but only there. That bass sustained forever. I played better because of it, less notes, fuller tone, pro sound. I wish I had a copy of the demo to show you guys.

After posting this, I did the most amazing thing - Typed in precision vs. Jazz in google. Imagine that. And from what I listened to from that on the "youtube"....I liked the pbass better. I think I need A) a bass teacher. B) a setup. C) to let a real bass player play my shit. D) maaaaybe a better instrument.

We have a cheap Dan Electro Hodad bass. It has a massive low end and sustains like crazy. Running it through a REDDI and into either a CAPI VP28 or a Seventh Circle N72 pre is a guaranteed instant cure for anyone who says the sound of a DI'd bass sucks. Try and imagine a bass cab fitted with an 18" and two 10"s... that kind of tone.

I'd add that the stock digi sans amp plug in is great on basses too. It has a really forward sound.

Those Lakland basses are serious business, I had one in here a few years ago and it's definitely in the jazz territory but sounded nicer than most jazz basses I've heard.

Yup that is the Jaco / Jazz sound for sure. Getchu one. By the way the Jaco documentary currently on Netflix has changed my life. 10/10 Would recommend to anyone serious about music.
You gotta sort of forget about being a guitar player to approach the bass properly. It's one of my favorite instruments. The techniques can get a bit tricky indeed. I really like the slap sound, lately.

The "best bass preamp" that most consider to be the cream of the crop was some old Alembic bass preamp. It turned out to be nothing more than a clone of the preamp and tone section from a blackface fender bassman..

The original Marshall circuits were based on that too, I think.
I hate to say it, but after all the proper analogue gear is figured out, if you don't track to tape, it's still more difficult to get a great bass tone.
The UAD Oxide plug I just got sounds more like tape than anything I've heard yet, so much so, it's a little spooky. I popped it on a bass track, and voila!, half decent bass tone. I think a lot of us have references deep in our heads of bass tones that were done analogue. You can't discuss classic rock bass tone without including tape as a factor.
