I've read online that some folks mod the tube amps in old Akai and Roberts reel to reel recorders for use as mic pres. Does anyone on RGO have an opinion or experience doing that? It's not small job and I'm wondering what quality of mic pre results.

You may need to change the tubes depending. I love mine. They rule. Bass. Snare. Vocal. Sometimes I pad signals at mix and run stuff through them. I love em. But I'd sell them...

Every old radio guy I've ever talked to about those has said some thing like "they worked great for awhile, then all the wiring fell apart", like they had a self-destruct manufacturing flaw. I don't know how far the rebuild guys get into it, but I'm certain you can do better DIY from scratch for similar money.
