Hopefully this won't affect logic X and I can just keep using Yosemite until I get a new computer.

Since I use El Capitan I have the deep feeling that it is a wise idea to keep one HD with a System on it running without any flaws.
As always Apple does something completely new because they want to sell new hardware. I bet it wont run on macs older than 2010 - something like that.
I have no idea why they announce a new OS while El Capitan is not fixed completely?? My guesswork is, they will soon announce to stop the support for El Capitan. In this case al EL users are bum-fucked.

My developer friends are telling much its pretty much a name change and the typical upgrade crap! So it sounds like Apple's OS dept is acting a bit more like Windows, while Windows is desperately trying to act like Apple...

No one is forcing you to upgrade, folks. Look at all the studios that still run PT 10 or Logic 9 or OS X 10.6.8!!!

Just when you figured out a bug work-around they give you another OS to figure out the new bugs.

As soon you want to run newer plug ins you will need at least OSX 10.10. Many Plug in developers force you to upgrade now. And its not a bad idea because it forces you to use 64 BIT plug ins, which helps Logic a lot.

My original point was they need to get the current OS fixed first kinda same as Avid . Also just read another pro tools expert article saying they are testing the new Apple OS and shouldn't be tried by anyone needing stability WTF but sounds just about right

No one is forcing you to upgrade, folks. Look at all the studios that still run PT 10 or Logic 9 or OS X 10.6.8!!! I've stuck with Pro Tools 10.0.0 and am running it on Max OS 10.7.1 flawlessly. It boots up in 3 SECONDS FLAT!! And when you launch a pro tools session from the PTX file, the software loads, syncs up everything and loads the full session in under 15 seconds from start to finish. And you are at work. It's going to take something pretty effing amazing to make me wanna switch from that. And as far as plugins are concerned? I've got the full Waves crap, the Duende SSL stuff, oodles of other little things and all the built in ones and little extras I've acquired over the years that still work. With my hardware, I'm doing just fine. I see guys on 11.x and 12 and they have things at their fingertips that I don't but so be it... my system is work just fine. No crashes. No corruptions. No losses. No wait times. 100% happy clients.

Wow, so before I can even determine if PT 12.4/ el cap is ready/ stable for pro studio environment, another OS is already coming down the pipe line... I have several drives and don't mind reformatting/ backing up, but dang I don't have time to test and try to break 2 new OS! Especially when PT 10.3.3 on Lion is by far my most stable setup. I do admit that from my testing 12.4 on el cap has been nice and I do enjoy the new meters/ resolution, but why release a new OS when the current OS isn't 110% stable.

I'd really like to hear everyone's experience running pro tools 12 on el captain is it stable? Most of what I've read wasn't good

It's a shame Tony isn't here anymore, because he has great luck with the latest version of PT and OS X.

It is my understanding, that he is on long-term sabbatical in search of creative financing operations and a gear-swapping scheme amongst other things. He may be away for quite some time. In the meantime, we have a host of other great experts in our midst!!

My advice is if you are using an older OS and are happy with it then make sure you have a Time Machine (or similar) backup and keep your studio computer disconnected from the Internet.
It appears the 'usual suspects' are beginning to embrace the 'forced upgrade by stealth' model. ie. Go to lunch and return to find a new OS has been 'magically' installed without your input.
There's been several reports of Windoze users having Windows 10 foistered upon them. I imagine Apple has been watching closely.
NOTE: Of course they may argue that you automatically agreed to any upgrades by using their products in the first place. I'm sure that clause will soon appear somewhere in the fine print of their EULA's if it doesn't already.

Something that makes me very nervous is their new file system with its built in encryption.

Something that makes me very nervous is their new file system with its built in encryption. Why does this make you very nervous? I am not too well versed in this subject even though I have read about Windows 10 "phoning home" and "forcing updates / downloads". How will this file system and encryption affect/ effect us end users?

It's a matter of compatibility moving projects between computers and the effect of encryption overhead on performance.
It's nothing to do with all of the security nonsense. Win 10 just works more like Macs have for years.

Win 10 just works more like Macs have for years. Ok I was worried that the new Mac OS would have the auto updating, since it was mentioned out of context a few posts above, and admittedly not knowing as much as others in this thread it seems I misinterpreted a bit. I am just now stress testing PT 12.4 on el cap on a secondary drive. I am on Lion OS X , PT 10.3.3 as it is the most stable for me and has been for awhile.

for the record, there is absolutely no need whatsoever to EVER upgrade beyond Mac OS 10.7.1 for those of us in music/audio production. And the damned thing was their very best OS in years. Boot time on a Mac Pro is less than 5 seconds. FIVE SECONDS. It is unreal, it is so fast. And memory management? They never matched it before or after.
These are my findings. Anyone have anything different to add to this?
