How good is this Massive Passive? Anyone use it? Anyone compare it to the hardware? I really want a MP, but don't want to drop the $3k+ or trade my Passeq to get one. For a couple hundo, I could grab a satellite and this plug and get myself in to UAD.

Im thinking about picking up the api 500 series eqs. Ive read alot of mixed reviews so im going to demo first and see if I really "need" them.
Dont forget your $25 June coupons!

I continually see ads on facebook from Apogee about buying their waves bundles with their hardware because "You can track with native plugins with Zero Latency". I have an octo card, so I can't track with most of my UAD plugins as they introduce lots of latency if they're on the channel I'm recording. But how do you guys feel about that whole latency thing? Not all of us have Apollos, some of us have PCIe cards or satellites and can't use the UAD stuff until mix stage. I often find myself swapping out UAD plugins during tracking with Native equivalents just so I can retain the sound i'm going for while tracking, and put 'em back when it's time to mix. But i personally find it a hindrance that I can't use UAD plugins while recording.
Also, BX_Digital V3 is like $50 or so right now, down from $300.
I've always wondered, since you can buy the BX stuff in both native and UAD formats, what if the UAD version was actually running natively behind the scenes, and wasn't interacting with the UAD chips lol. What if they (BX) had been conning all the UAD customers this whole time?!?! :-P

The ua Console which is the front end to the apollo shows the total dsp usage of all ua plugs you use.
Are you seriously suggesting that UA/BW would have created a false load to mislead people about which UA plugs are actually running ?

For a couple hundo, I could grab a satellite and this plug and get myself in to UAD. Good Afternoon, I've grown to really love the Massive Passive. I've been on the platform since 2011 and have most of the plugs at this point. MP is a bit of a memory hog, but it is one of the rare digital EQ's that boosts in the highs really well. It takes a while to get used to it - especially the shelf option that really exaggerates the inverse of the area around the frequency boost or cut (best to refer to the hardware manual for a decent overview) - but man, it works. I've grown to really like the mastering version in particular. The knobs are stepped, the frequencies are a little different, and the +/- range is a lot smaller. Its just easier to fine tune. I could swear its a little firmer sounding, but that is probably due to being able to dial in more accurately. It doesn't sound like you are an Apollo guy, but I am quite fond of using the Massive Passive and the Vari Mu on the way in for tracking. Sometimes I use a preamp sim (I like the 610 paired with these two) but often not, as the Manley's have a very nice refined tube harmonic texture. I will also sometimes use this pairing on the two bus if it is more acoustic or singer songwriter material. Well worth the demo, if you have the time. MJH

It's not exactly easy to write code for an embedded system like the SHARC chips.. They basically develop their plugins twice. once for regular computers and again for the SHARC chips. Obviously you missed the part where I said I have an octo card and am well aware of the UAD Meter app.

No, I didn't miss that you have an octo but as you can only run plugs in your daw and not in UA console as you don't use an apollo, perhaps you didn't consider the implication of that ?
The whole point of an apollo with onboard ua dsp is real time tracking using its Console with very low latency. When UA releases another company's plugs, like BW, they don't just work in your daw, like usual ,they also run in console for real time tracking with very low latency, which means on the ua sharc chips.
So, I think it unlikely that BW and UA are misleading people about where the plug software is actually running.
Have you tried an apollo and been dissatisfied with it ? Sounds like you would appreciate its front end tracking efficiencies ? Console isn't perfect, no midi, etc., but the real time tracking with UA and other plugs is an interesting workflow. You may know ua also has a console recall app, you imbed in your daw session that links your plugs for tracking and in your daw ?
As you use logic, there is a guy who has re-skinned all the ua presets into the typology used by logic, so they are more readily accessible in the logic drop downs and to me the ua gui's seem slightly larger and crisper. He only charges like 5 British pounds for file and provides updates.
You may know too that UA and BW have a cross grade program which is very attractively priced.

I swear you work for them, the way you post about 'em.
I bought an octo card because I have an Apogee Symphony I/O. An apollo is a downgrade for me, sonically. THIS IS MY OPINION AND MY GEAR PREFERENCE, EVERYONE.

You know that moment when you bring a new amp head to a gig and think it sounds absoltely amazing compared to your old amp head, and the audience and band can't tell the difference? the UAD stuff is kinda like that. Unless you have the top of the top converters, your room is perfect, and your speakers are amazing, it's not that drastic of an improvement. It's an improvement, but you're not gonna hear it as strongly as you think you will. It's not like switching from an SM57 (Native plugins) to a U47 when tracking vox, for example.

Nope don't work for UA and never have.
Actually, I was just trying to both clarify and respond to what you had said in your first post: "But i personally find it a hindrance that I can't use UAD plugins while recording. "?
The only way to do that is to use an Apollo.

For me, I'd just like to be able to access some plugs that aren't available natively. Vari Mu and Massivo, SHMC, Curve Bender. That said, do I really NEED any of that, nah. What it really comes down to is me wanting a more flexible/surgical mastering eq without dropping a ton of coin.

I'm already in so deep with UA, I could never get out...without a huge loss. I haven't seen anything I just had to have in a long time... I hear ya, man. Been saying that for awhile. When it comes to buying UAD plugs, you kiss that money goodbye. Total loss. At least with other plugs, you could sell and recoup some investment down the road. With UAD, it's a total loss (unless you sell you're entire rig, but that's not practical). And you'd be kidding yourself if you're convinced that their sales/vouchers/coupons are saving you money. A dollar is a dollar, and you can kiss them goodbye with UAD.

I sense a crack in the UA armor. The plugs are excellent though...but I never use the plugs on the way in. Unless it's a guitar effect.

I like the API 550A/560 over the Vision channel strip, for what it's worth. The 560 is pretty useful. But 95% Pro-Q 2 or the new E27 work for me.
I've accumulated a lot of UAD stuff. The things I use the most/at all are the EMT 140, EMT 250, ATR-102, Dimension D, Ocean Way Room, 1176, and LA-2A. I only have a Twin at home, and an Octo card at the studio, so I'd use more of them when I mix at home if I had more processing power. A Twin doesn't go very far.
The H910 seems like it would be a good creative tool...I like simplicity and Crystalizer, the only harmonizer I have, a little too tweaky for my taste. I'll probably demo it and try it out. That and the BX20 are whats left that peaks my interest/I'd consider spending money on (I'm sure stuff like the Curve Bender is great but too pricey for me)

Rarely if ever use it. I demo'd the API 550 and I did think it had a little more mojo than the Waves version. But really, like you said, is +2 at 2khz really different on the API as compared to the Pro-Q2? Not really enough for me to buy.

A couple of nights ago I demoed the 500 eqs and after 10 mins of playin with them I bought them. 560 on kick is wonderful...really easy to sculpt the close mic around what is already there in the ohs/rooms. Seemed to add some nice weight too. Punch for days... Then the real kicker was the 550 on crunchy rythem guitars. A little boost at 1.6 added some "muscle" to the sound that I couldnt replicate with my other eqs(slate vmr/waves manny/kush clari/etc...) It also seemed to exagerate the dynamics almost like a transient designer which is awsome on overdriven guitars that are overcompressed in nature. Sold! Now my duo is starting to sweat and begging for a quad sat for some help!
