Actually, it might have been the best outcome for him. I don't think he will be as tied to the show, so he can get a deal and move on quicker.

I know a magician that was on AGT, he says that you win and can take the money and be in their deal, or you can win, buy out of the deal with, say, half the money, and hope to make it on your own.
Would he have some sort of similar option coming out of it if he had won?

This doesn't make sense. "Congratulations! Here is $50,000 and a recording contract" "I don't want to be on a contract with you" "Oh. Ok, Well then you have to pay us $25,000 to not be on the contract". "that seems kind of sheisty..." "oh, it is. it's very sheisty" "So the only way to not be on a contract with you is either pay you half of what I won or just relinquish all winnings entirely?" "yeah, pretty much! See you next season as a guest performer!"

It all depends on what you're looking to do after being on it.
He said it's better to be in the finals, and not win. They all go on the same tour after usually, as long as you're past a certain point in the show. Same as last comic standing. All I know, is the guy is now on a traveling magic show with Mr. Goth Magican himself these days.. I'd say it's a step up from his regular bar spot downtown that was 7 bucks per show. Granted, he'd also bartend and do tricks while you waited for it to start. He is a true showman and deserves everything he has.

It's like watching the guy win $70,000 in prizes to walk off stage and find he needs $35k cash to pay his tax bill.

We're making a bluegrass record with his local band here right now. Guess we'll see if we get to finish it or not.
