Well, Slate did say this was coming on Facebook two years ago but a week after the big Empirical Labs announcement here's a reasonably priced Distressor that will rival the hardware. It must suck to be Dave Derr right now.

for those who believe plugins are EXACT REPLICA's of hardware.... I have lots of plugs and hardware but I sure do not feel plugs are nearly the same.

I'll say this for Steven, he would have made a great drug dealer, give them that free taste and get them hooked!

Not surprised, I have this love hate thing with subscriptions, just like Netflix, HBO Vudu ect. It seams like a bargain till I add up all my fees and realize I in the end I have nothing. Guys like slate are starting to realize people have figured out they pretty much one or two families of plugins and that's it !

Second he may should call his lawyers .... is not the distressor his invention?

You can't copyright an electronic circuit, only apply for a patent if it uses technology you invented. What's protected in a piece of gear are the name (trademark), and the PCB's layout + front panel design (both considered artwork). Everything else is free-game.

Thanks jordanvoth, forgive me for not knowing, but do you mean there's a Slate product called Distressor?

Thanks jordanvoth, forgive me for not knowing, but do you mean there's a Slate product called Distressor? Hey Martin. The Distressor is a (hardware) compressor made by Empirical Labs that became a runaway hit from the 90s onward. It's about as iconic as new design/modern gear gets. They do a lot of things really well and you don't see any large studios without at least a pair or two. The place I rent gear from, which has a ridiculous list of gear, has 10 of them (granted they have 2 or 3 rooms there). Slate has been talking about modeling it forever, he just (slyly) announced it officially right before the Empirical Labs guy, Dave Derr, puts his plugin emulation on sale.

EVOLVED.
Is this 100th 1176 plugin going to be described as warm, lush, with "just the right amount of top end" and huge lows?
Let's face it, i'll be installing the free one though. You can't sell me on subscription services. I don't have cable tv anymore and am still on PT 11.

I'll say this for Steven, he would have made a great drug dealer, give them that free taste and get them hooked! I've tried Slate's free bundles many times and just can't on with them. I always end after the trial. To me, he represents just how generic plugins are. He's got all the imitations of the hardware all available on one insert, but I never feel the mojo. I know others feel differently, power to them, but he never got me hooked and I really use very few plugins anymore. The one's I use most are the parametrics (Fabfilter - Waves Q 10) to get a quick feel for frequencies.

Yeah, funny that every other medium is moving away from subscription bundles to a la carte...yet, plugins...

I don't have any problem with him offering these as subscription - as long as he also offers them for purchase. It's the companies that ONLY offer subscription that piss me off. I'd rather just go rent the hardware.

Yeah, funny that every other medium is moving away from subscription bundles to a la carte...yet, plugins... As The Beard of Audio Knowledge has stated earlier, new accounting rules really are makeing software companies run to the subscription model. It also means a predictable cash flow, plugins are a world of fashion, and that means the constant pressure to develop, market, develop, market. add in the world of credit card fees and other fun stuff to keep the lights on.

I get it, I just like being able to own what I use on a regular basis. However, it's nice to be able to rent for a month if I have a special project.

Of course if you read any of your software users agreement, you realize in the world of software you never owned it to begin with! It sucks, and I find it morally corrupt, but I became addicted when I was privy to Everything on NFRSand then this damn IPhone ! Ah the brave new world of software we give them money we own nothing!

Yes, I've read that...but for all intents and purposes, I possess them for the stated amount and never have to pay anything else. Basically I have licensed them for perpetuity.
