A while back I posted about looking for a place to track some drums. Well, booked a place and tracked drums and bass yesterday. Doing some more bass and guitars today. Here are some shots from the sessions. imgur.com/a/sDwEHMore pics added. Updated link ^.

I'm seeing a pair of Cascade Fatheads in M/S out front of the kit and what looks like an Oktava MK012 on the hats. What are the mics on the large floor tom and out front of the kick?

Thanks Jesse.
Nice drum room. Are those diffusers to the drummers left or foam?
Where did you place the guitar amps? It looks like the guitar players are in another room.
Vocalist in booth during totally live recording?
Thanks for the pics!
Looking forward to hearing the raw tracks.

There are a bunch of 2" and 4" panels around both the live room and control room, but no diffusers. There are some foam gobos here and there, I assume to try to combat some direct reflections, those must be what you're seeing. Guitars and vocals were just recording scratch tracks yesterday. They were both in the control room running direct. The bass player was in the big iso booth that you can see in the back of the live room. He had a Science Mother 200, Ampeg 4x10, SVTDI, Rick 4001, and a bunch of pedals. http://instagram.com/p/BFbxsdaJQom

The Purple Place treats foam as a worthless expense, but I often see it it in studios. So, I'm always curious to how/why it is being used.

I'm guessing that they purchased a bunch of foam before building all their bass traps and rather than ditching it all, still use it as spot treatment to tame some reflections. The place has a real DIY / rock and roll vibe to it. It's a no frills place that pumps albums out at a fair price.

We were paying $1,400.00 months for a similar space but could not make ends meet. So, we got out of the deal and went into my large basement. So, I'm still wondering if the rehearsal space/recording space concept can make money. How big a city is the facility in?

The guy runs the place plays in a few bands, I assume they use it to rehearse, but I doubt he's renting the space to others as a rehearsal space. I don't know if he has an hourly rate. I'm under the impression that he quotes a price for a project type thing. 10 song EP over 5 days or something. I booked just the room and gear as an outside engineer, he's not here, so I'm not paying for his time.

How do you like the 604s? I got a bunch of them about the time I largely stopped tracking drums, so I haven't used them for that in ages.
Anywhere else you like them?
I thought they were decent on guitar amps.
Thanks for the pics!
Cheers, Geoff

Unbelievably lightweight mics and easy to position because of their size.

I am jealous of the drums! I am one floor tom and one crash short of a similar setup: goals.
I use e604 for small toms, when I even mic toms close. I think using a bigger mic on the low toms was/is a smart move, for more bass frequency.
The 604 is very similar to an SM57, they can almost be used interchangeably I think. I have three of them.

I gotta say, the tracks sound much better than I would have though looking at all the foam on the walls of that place..

I'm surprised at how much moongel you guys are using on those toms with pinstripes. Were they tuned really high?

I'm surprised at how much moongel you guys are using on those toms with pinstripes. Were they tuned really high? We spent quite a bit of time working on the drums with the tuning and the gel. For the rack tom, we cut a piece in half and only ended up using that I think. Any more get than that and the tom was sounding totally choked and dead. For the floor toms, they were just really ringy. We tried with less/none and they just sounded out of control. I haven't dug through all the tracks yet to totally get a sense of how they came out though. The control room that we tracked in had a sub and it threw me off a bit. Everything seems leaner than I had expected.

I do tune my drums rather low though.

I've got a 14x5.5 DW Black Nickel over Brass, but want a 6.5" brass. The Black Beauty's are soooo expensive though, so the Sensitone seems like a sensible option.

You can find them around for like 200$. It's got pretty much the same shell as the black beauty but it has cast hoops. I love mine. 99% of the same tone as the Black Beauty.

I just checked your website and you have so much of the same gear as me, along with gear I want to get. Great minds think alike, haha. How do you like the DW 5.5x14? I was thinking about picking one up as my next drum purchase. The Design Series. I have the Pork Pie Big Black Brass 6.5x14" and I love it. All of these drums have very similar shells, which is most of the tone. I'm looking at a 5.5" because sometimes I feel that the BIG BRASS is just a bit too much for some things. I would not hesitate on the Sensitone though. I have the aluminum 6.5x14 Sensitone and it's a beast of a drum, and really well made. Also cost me about $100 less than the Ludwig Acrolite would have.
