I see the cart's back up at capi-gear.com and want to build some vp28's .. I've built a few GAR2520's though, and those are the time sucker!
On www.diyrecordingequipment.com they've got a suite of op amps that are various level kits - and I'm looking at the whistlerock 25 which is a partial build with a few surfacemount components. Has anybody tried those and compared to the GAR2520 or the rogue? I'll pay 7-8 bucks more to do a smaller opamp kit vs an hour+ per GAR, if the sacrifice to the sound isn't apparent. I have never heard any real comparisons, other than the conversation of preamps with opamp vs without opamp.
Thanks for any insight!

I'm at the point where the only choice is between the Scott Liebers 2520 red dot, and his 1731, not a diy option, but a marginal cost diff for a better end result imo. haven't tried the rogue5, but Brad makes sweet stuff...

I hear you. I am looking forward to making 12 DOA's in the near future here and just can't wait to fuck a few up. Jk. I've heard great things about Pier from Studio Ing's 992 DOA's and they are supposed to take about 20 or so minutes each. Mail is from Italy so it takes a bit but ive built several of his pieces and they are top notch.

Jeff told me that his preferred op amp config for the VP28 is the Gar2520 and Gar1731, not the SL red dots, so that's somethin' to think about. an hour build time per op amp isn't bad.

Scott's amps are killer no doubt. I would say the most popular VP28 combo is a gar2520/gar1731 but I think its because they are kits as much as anything. I tell people there are truly no bad opamp's in the ones I carry.

Man, when the capi guy himself chimes in, Id be a fool to steer myself from his vision. I already have a gar2520 I can swap. Might as well help pay back that move to Nashville a bit more!

No I love them I was so happy here was the sound I remember from an old API, that midrange just felt like home and just a tad bit of rough along the edges not the almost Gigi clean of new 2520s!
