I have been using amp sims (sgear, logic) a lot lately and have read quite a bit about using impulse responses in a convo reverb as my speaker cab sim.
do you guys do this, and if so, where should I begin?

To me most of the Amp Sims don't make it, even if you use cab IRs. They do not sit in the mix, they sound like a lame duck. In my book the best compromise is to use a real tube amp in conjunction with a power soak and a DI box. In this case some CAB IRs can make sense. Sometimes you have to pre or post compress because they do not capture the dynamic part of the CAB. It sounds 1000 times more authentic than any amp simulation and I can play it in the control room with ease. Amp OUT Speaker OUT -> Power Soak with DI -> 1073 Mic Pre -> CAB SIM. The best ones I know are made by www.redwirez.com/free1960g12m25s.jspI wait for the day that a plug in can capture the dynamic part of the cab.

I just bought a pair of those countryman di for this purpose.
Is the power soak necessary, or just added benefit? Or is it acting as your speaker load?

Jupp the soak is the load for the speaker I did build my load myself 4 and 8 Ohm switchable. Its easy to do.... sorry fo mix up load and soak... load is the right term.... works great, I love it.
