Anyone ever record vocals first , to a click , then record all the music to the vocal and click ?
I was tired of always having to follow the music when recording a vocal because the drums and music set the groove and then the vocal had to conform to the music . I always had to get the vocal to lock in with the music . I thought screw that . Vocals are most important , I want the vocal to be in charge and everything else conform to the vocal . So I started recording the vocal first to a click and then make all the other instruments follow the vocal .
So far I really like recording this way . The vocal sets the groove and even the key of the song changes to whatever is most comfortable because theres no music forcing which key to sing in .
If the vocal is the most important thing let it be the boss and be the leader .
Anyone else ever record this way ?

Many have used a guide vocal over the years, if it works it works. Give it a try!

I had a perfect pitch client sing a lead vocal, then overdub an acoustic, got it right in one pass apiece. Otherworldly.

nice to have a guide vocal/melody, as everything you do as a player is based on it, well, at least it should be IMO.

Yeah basically its the same concept , because it is a guide vocal . I'm just saying make the ULTIMATE guide vocal not a throw away guide vocal but the final vocal , that way every decision and track has to conform to the already finished vocal .
When theres no music to sing along with I think everybody sings a groove that is more comfortable and natural . They aren't trying to follow anything , so the vocal has complete 100% control over the feel of the groove .
Its an experiment I've never tried before and so far its pretty cool .

One of my students has been telling me to do this for years. When I finally get home after this long and lonely month will finally take him up on it. For me it makes so much sense as most of what I create is melody driven and is written and informed by my voice, I am accompanying myself most of the time, and it gives me a sense of freedom to open up my voice and to enable the flow and mindlessness of my creativity. I can't wait.

I think you're talking about finished songs, but sometimes I write songs this way. I sing jibberish words along with a vocal melody that I make up as I go along to a click at a certain tempo, or a kick/snare pattern. It frees me from chord changes and I go with the flow at the tempo.I keep what I like and if I need another section I work at that until it's finished. I do this until the entire vocal melody is complete. Then, I work on the music arrangement after I attach lyrics to the melody and sing a guide vocal. Then, after the entire arrangement is complete I sing the finished vocal.

I try to do a scratch vocal that is as close to the final as I can get. Track around that. Then retract the final at the end. The scratch needs to be good pitch wise though. Guitar bends, steel slides etc will be effected by the scratch vocal. Know what I mean?

Oddly enough, of all the times a guide vocal was the first thing tracked, the song always seamed to go in a completely different direction by the time it was done!
