Wise words by Blondie. Meanwhile I heard that YT is also "blackmailing" major labels. Their argument is that the Majors should take what they give them (and we don't give you more) - because they cant control which user is uploading the songs again. In other words: You can tell your lawyers to write notices all the time, but the music will be online anyway. I ask myself what is so hard to block songs form uploading?? It should be just a few lines of code. What is so hard to make clear in the upload process that the user is not allowed to upload the work of someone else. But hell, try it yourself. I did it and there is no notice, no big warning, nothing. The truth is.... they don't want to warn the user because they make millions with music and other copyright protected material. Myself I know how hard it is to do guitar video instructions. They just take it and show it to everybody for for free. I say FUCK YOU YOU TUBE. I hope that the USA is going to be a guide for the EU to change the law in a drastic way. www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2016/apr/26/debbie-harry-youtube-royalties

I don't know why youtube can't hire a team of people to pre-screen every video uploaded . They could sit there all day quickly approving videos . Hire some young kids out of high school or college to sit in a cubicle checking videos all day . If it gets backlogged and you gotta wait a few days for your video to appear then fine .
Maybe if you want your videos uploaded instantly you could pay extra for a Gold Youtube membership . Otherwise the free acount you gotta wait in line ,

I am not kidding you... in Germany german GEMA is now in year 7 fighting in front of a judge with You Tube. Meanwhile a stupid curt in Munich decided that not google is is responsible for the content, its the one who uploads it. Ok if this is true, in the end of a long lawsuit, in this case sending notices to users gets near impossible because of data protection acts in the EU. The only way how we can save the music business, and the songwriters, is to have new laws on both sides of the ocean. It is very important that politics in the EU and in the US work together with the right holders and their collecting societies. Its time get up - stand up for your right.... Google had enough time to do the right thing. They decided to ruin a whole industry and the music culture in many countries around the globe. Fair play - Fair pay.

The tech is already there....literally IN YouTube already for IP owners to search for "their" material--all you have to do is put that on the upload side. They don't because they know their hits would fall exponentially without people's ability to upload whatever they want. There would be huge holes....they want to appear to give IP holders a way to monetize the playback completely on THEIR terms--not actually allow them to control the IP they own.

I wouldn't hold your breath for the US to lead on stopping music from being stolen and uploaded/downloaded for free use. With more technology coming (driverless cars/trucks/cabs, robotic bartenders, robotized fast food etc. etc.) there is going to be an even larger gap between the small percentage of haves and everybody else. Music-and I suspect increasingly film- will be part of the welfare state necessary to keep people pacified as they gain less and less opportunity and control of their lives.

There was a time when Micro$oft was the most evil thing we had ever known in technology.... but in fact it wasn't evil, just devoid of any morals or ethics.
Google has been able to out-Satan even the dark lord himself. Android, Youtube, Google analytics, etc... all just ooze evil out of every pore.
Rant over.

I can honestly say that I have gotten into countless bands when I was a young kid from my friends making me a copy of their album. In turn, I ended up going to many of their shows (AND STILL DO), where real money actually gets into the pockets of these bands. GnR still has to sue their label every couple of years to get a fraction of their royalties paid out to them. Nothing has changed there. On the flip side, I sell very very few albums, but get streams "regularly". It's enough that I get my next album's cdbaby online fees paid for.
The point I'm trying to make is that there's a time and place, and the market saturation is literally insane. "Local band" isn't your only alternative to radio anymore, and hasn't been for going on 20 years. If your videos get a lot of hits, youtube gives you royalties. A buddy of mine got 400 bucks to have his song in a company's youtube video. Please think bigger than your songs being stolen, because you're fighting more than just the "The Man", you're also in an arms race with a million other bands that are probably better at internet promotion than you, most likely better looking (because that matters more these days than ever with youtube).
As lame as it may sound, Fall Out boy's "This ain't a scene it's an arms race" is a very valid statement in today's music economy. Commercial licensing and live shows are still king in the money makers. I make 150-400 a night sitting on a stool in a dive bar or at a party for a couple hours, but maybe a full year to make 50 bucks in streams. I also grew up understanding that though. I have accepted in my 30's that my day job will always exist for me to support a family.
You should be almost as angry at the makers of home studio gear, for killing the big studio budgets. Local bands don't "have" to go to a place for 45 an hour to record their "3 song demo" anymore, and end up with a pretty damn good record.
Adapt!
