I felt it was only fair to start a separate thread about this mic rather then to continue to hijack the tlm67 mod thread. Im just wondering how many people on here own one? Are there any comparison files to a vintage u67 or have any of you guys done a shootout?
I read the entire thread over at groupdiy but thats more of a technical thread, im after how this thing sounds.

I tried to be respectful to ami/ cathedral, while still letting the brothers know there is a VERY good alternative. We should probably move this to the diy forum...? The D-67 is extensively covered over at group DIY. here is the rather awesome thread groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=50021.0 the parts used in poctop's build are second to none, i am partial to the Ioaudio BV, thought he AMI is good also.

U got me started and that threads got me at a fever pitch for this mic. Which tranny seems to be closer to the vintage unit. Were some guys also swapping out different capacitors as well?

If you can get your hands on an original U67, you can vary the values of a few caps(not sure which off hand?) to tailor the eq curve a bit, and match more closely to an original. I think one of the lucky phenomenons with vintage mics and vintage gear in general, is the aging of the parts as a whole, come with a rounding off of certain freq's that actually benefit us in the digital realm? I really like the Ioaudio tranny's, max's first ones were made with NOS of neumanns original lams..i think?? or maybe the same iron stock...cant remember. I believe they are more $ than the AMI. The AMI's are also great, i have them in a few mics that i love. A great capsule is huge, the tubes make a rather large difference, if you can afford to experiment, switch those around. The Mullard's seem to have a dark chocolate appearance IME, which suits my idea of vintage U67 good luck with yours dee, let us know how your coming along T

Here's a pair I built. IO transformer and Beesneez, original neumann brass, K67 capsules. I finally went with a matched pair of nos telefunken 806s. They sound great. Good luck with your build.

I just acquired a mid 1960s Mullard EF86 for a future U67 build. I heard it was less bright than the Telefunken EF86, which is cool because the U67s I have heard are sort of dark. I will probably use the AMI transformer and BeesNeez K6. I am building a C12 first though, so I wont get to it until next year.

Just wondering after reading your post. If the U67's you've heard are sort of dark and the mullard EF86 is less bright, wouldn't that tube make the mic even darker?

Just wondering after reading your post. If the U67's you've heard are sort of dark and the mullard EF86 is less bright, wouldn't that tube make the mic even darker? No, not necessarily, because I do not know what tube was in the U67s I've heard that were generally darker than I expected. They could have been non-original tubes. You make a good point, but I was specifically advised by a guy that sells tubes to U67 owners that about half of people find the Telefunken EF86 tubes to be too bright in a U67, so I have to trust that. You also have to consider that using modern components in a clone might result in a slightly brighter mic than a vintage version. The tube could help compensate a bit. Basically, if I'm building a U67 clone, I'm not expecting a bright, airy mic, which is supposedly what happens sometimes in clones. I'm not especially worried. Mullard is included in the list of tubes recommended by Klaus for the U67, and it was a little cheaper than a Tele anyway. Apparently there were two different types of Tele EF86, and the later one is a little brighter/sharper. We will see what happens once I build the U67. Maybe I will swap for a Tele after all.

I scored a NOS 9622 mullard that i put in my K2 Rode(waaaay modded), it darkened it to perfection, what a great tube, and what a spectacular mic(tim campbell capsule)
