Well, I don't know about $500, a good capsule and tube equal that, and a mildly adjusted apex with a Chinese capsule wont touch a quality clone to my ears, I've tried and compared. I'm currently building a pair of point to points Elams, I have a pair of TC capsules, once I get them dialed as best I can, Dr Shankenstein will do his voodoo, should be interesting! I've painstakingly sourced a bunch of original parts, they make a much larger difference than most may think, it's actually a 50/50 thing I've discovered, 50% capsule/50% everything else, this is my experience, ymmv.

No doubt the capsule and all matters. What I'm saying is the metalwork and transformer from the Apex are solid basis for modding. You can find used capsules or hand-picked, or chinese capsules redone by folks like Shannon for cheaper than the "named" capsule makers. Tubes are so subjective though, and one man's 10$ JJ is another's 200$ NOS RCA blackstar short plate. The PCB can be left in, and the parts simply exchanged and rewired, no expensive PCB needed. It's all relative though. Then again, I don't like kits all that much. I find the process of building something from junk more rewarding.

Allegedly 3U Audio, which KidVybes had introduced myself and others to with his enthusiastic endorsement of their mics, has a new tube-based GZ251 for a little over a grand. I currently use their premium fet GZ251 as my main axe in my VO booth every day and I love how it sounds, and judging from the compliments I get, my clients love it too. So, I'm very curious to hear how Guosheng's new tube 251 sounds.
FYI: 3U Audio is a boutique mic company from a mic designer who designed and builds (in his own factory) capsules for ADK (and I think Rode, too). Because he has his own factory and uses his own proprietary circuit designs, and he sells directly if you email him, there's no middleman and he sells these really great sounding mics for near wholesale. Kidvybes was the first guy to notice these mics and talk about them. He had posted soundfiles over at the purple site. I actually think his unsolicited discussions about them really got 3U off the ground.

Another mic you might try out is the new Mojave MA-1000. It will be a strong contender in the below $3,000 mark. Totally stock, they are really great sounding mics. It would also make for one of the very sweetest mics to mod, if you are hunting for that fine hand tuned sound to suit a certain voice with some of Shannon's handiwork.

Yeah, Guosheng told me yesterday he's got the metalwork and powder coating about sorted out and that the GZ251 (tube) will be coming out "first". Not sure what "first" means in that context but I sure hope it means a tube version of everything to follow. He's had tube mics the whole time but I think he's been doing some re-designing. His turnaround time on getting suggestions of what people want and then getting them designed, built and out the door is kind of amazing. His mics are flatout as good as anything I've heard (I've only had the FET versions here, FWIW). I'm gonna see if I can get more info. He's got new SDC's coming out too.

The C12 and 251 are pretty close brethren as far as designs go. it wouldn't be much of a BOM change to have a single mic that can be configured to do both, for cost cutting.

I am looking for a big jump from my 87 which sounds good now. I am looking for an amazing mic for tracking female vocals so I need to be VERY aware of all these new mic's with their sibilance and zing. I almost want to just go get a vintage mic and forget about all this striving...

I almost want to just go get a vintage mic and forget about all this striving... I gotta say, a C12/251 might not be the best for females. They have a scoop that tends to leave females sounding a bit powerless, if that makes sense. The darker/heavier sounding mics like U47 might be a better bet if you want more body from the mic sound.

You should def be aware of the new mics out there but I think you'd find Guosheng's mics to be neither sibilant nor zingy. They just sound like classic, big league mics. He's a capsule wizard and purposely voices them to be non-sibilant.

For female vox I'd get the Blackspade UM17B. Agree with Svart, what you're looking for is a U47/M49 type mic, and no need to overpay (it's under 2K). For the same level of quality, but with a nicer body-kit, go Flea...
Generally though, I'd always buy European when going boutique. US brands are always (and in some cases massively) overpriced in comparison.

Omni sometimes works better on intimate females, and can really change the upper midrange response of the mic to be more complementary on a u47 type.
Likewise U87 sometimes sounds better in Fig 8.
An SDC like KM84 can work well on females.
The Bock 241 has a custom Haun CK12 copy with vintage style hardware, probably worth auditioning too because it has that switch which softens the highs in a 1db slope, not an over-bright modern sounding mic at all.
