Sorry, but are these guys kidding with this? they offer exactly 0 technical information, and a whole shit load of hyperbole, does anyone know what converter chips they're using? After reading this "about pep" www.jcfaudio.com/manuals/aboutpep.pdf i'm all but certain the JCF latte and this new box are mostly just hype machines, considering they say nothing substanative at all in regard to the pieces, it's all voodoo, i'd also add that if i want transformers on the front or back end of a converter, i'll add them myself, i don't want them on my conversion full time.

I would really like to hear the results and opinions here as well. I know when BLA designed their new clock one of the improvements that seemed to be a big deal was the improvement of the galvanic transformer isolation, from what I'm reading on a lot of these new converters and clocks that they're trying to remove as much active components as possible. Seems they're using a step up transformer to boost rather than active buffers.
Someone needs to figure that out.... a big part of the sound in these converters and clocks is noise filtering.

I have 2 x AD8 for 16ch There are no 'chips' per say in the audio path. They use custom wound Cinemag input transformers. The AD8 effectively has two 'record' modes. Low latency mode(non PEP) and PEP. The first is very open/natural sounding without the zing typical of ICs. Cymbals sound like cymbals. PEP initially sounds a little more 'round' but in actuality its just smoother and makes mixing gel unlike any other convert I've ever tried before. I've had my hands on myteks, antelopes, etc etc. Not a knock at those brands but the AD8 is very unique to say the least.
You gotta try them to see if they work for you.
Josh at JCF is very responsive which is always a big plus in my books.

They should save the hyperbole, as it only makes them look bad, and one guy removing the lid and taking a picture answers ALL the questions they seem to be dodging, the funny part is, from the VERY little you can ascertain from their description, this seems up my ally, and eventually I will be looking for straight up AES AD conversion of higher quality, i already have 34 superb channels of killer DA, now get off my dang lawn!!

AKM chips Very quick test makes the 16x sound raw with much sibilance and mid heavy

I'm assuming the Avid 16?
the spec sheet on that chip is woefully lacking benchmark testing(unless i missed it somehow after skimming the entire datasheet), i was unable to find THD, S/N or DR, it's an eight channel chip, it can be utilized in a single chip configuration that would certainly increase it's performance, if it's implemented multi chip for 8 channels, it will have some sonic shortcomings IME, a max of 2 channels per chip with a great psu is the deal imo. I really don't like a lack of info, Soz, can you post a pic of the gutz? that would be awesome!

Ok I'm reading this with Very very limited knowledge and somewhat understand better components should mean better sound BUT if the components work well together and give a great sound does it matter ? Just asking not trying to start anything in the end it's all about the sound right?

Ok I'm reading this with Very very limited knowledge and somewhat understand better components should mean better sound BUT if the components work well together and give a great sound does it matter ? Just asking not trying to start anything in the end it's all about the sound right? it's always about the sound of course, but there are fundamental things you can glean from a spec sheet that will tell you generally what to expect, IE. where bottle necks might be occurring, or conversely where something should shine, 8 channels on a single chip will have a tougher time than a single channel on a chip, when I demoed the Antelope Orion 32, it sounded pretty good on single channel to my ears, but then it fell down badly when it was loaded up, it's an 8 channel on one chip design, S/N and DR specs are all affected by this as well, the Orion doesn't spec near the top of whats available to begin with, so the result was predictable. Also, in my mind a bench mark bar has been set, if you don't reach close to the best specs available as a manufacturer, it indicates compromising, and thats fine, products have price points, but some of these rigs make some pretty big claims, and cost way too much money to be less than near the top of the spec sheet, of course this is JMO, but i want to know everything there is to know about whats going on inside, on paper, and if I like what i see, i have an expectation that wants a listening demo to give it the ultimate ears based..., yaay or naay.

The other converters I was considering were the Merging Hapi... they speck about the best out and are balls clear and amazing!!!!!! bot to me for distance orchestra recording and some classical stuff but I personally find them like a laboratory environment and not musical for my needs at all...
