I've been thinking a lot lately on ways that could improve the recording process that aren't really feasible in the physical world.
1)The ability to have a permanent set of virtual VUs always on screen (or on a second little monitor you know we all have around)...and have a way to click(+some modifier) on any place in the mixer and it patches the VUs in there. Like click it to the right of a plug in, it taps to the output of that plug...to the left the input side...top of the fader run--channel output to buss. Fader bottom run, to the input of the "audio fader" (most useful on a buss)...
2) A preference to have monitor enabled tracks disable the dry yet still perform sends--useful when using any external mixer to monitor, but you want to monitor wet. Now, I set the send to prefader and zero out the fader--accomplishes the same thing, but then I have to change the fader to listen to playback...
3) some sort of auto gain staging of tracks. I spend a decent amount of time trimming everything to nominal levels at the beginning of a mix--seems like that could be automated with a few adjustable parameters.
What say you? Any ideas now that DAW tech is pretty mature...really getting into nitpicky little things at this point...but, timesavers, for sure.
