Confirmed by the managing director at Rycote, it turns out the Rycote shockmount being marketed with the Aston microphones is the exact same product as their much more expensive Invision USM. The only difference is that the Aston-branded mount has purple lyres instead of the USM's black lyres.
And last week before I posted about it on the massive 3u Audio mics thread Kidvybes had stared at the purple site, it was $64. But now that myself and others on GS started snapping them up and talking about it, they jacked the price up to $79.
Not long ago, I was looking into the Rycote Invision shockmounts for my booth. I saw a lot of great reviews and did some research on infrasonics and how a shockmount like the USM, with its body-gripping style, could reduce mic body resonance and improve the sound of your mic. Fascinating acoustic nerd stuff I won't bore you with, but it made me rethink my standard-style metal spider mounts I was using.
So I started a conversation with Simon over at Rycote, who by the way will return your email very promptly and seems like a really nice dude. Along the way I noticed that Vintage King and B&H Photo carried this purple-lyred Rycote mount that looked an awful lot like their USM model, but it was $64 US, almost half as much as the USM and USM-L. Unlike with the USM model listing, the Aston mount had zero specs listed. It took a little searching but I discovered the Aston mics were 54mm in diameter, which the USM could accommodate. Finally, I pinged Simon and flat out asked him if it was the same mount and he confirmed it was, just with purple lyres. It made sense, the idea they would tool up and design and manufacture a brand new bargain mount was less likely than taking a mount they already had designs and molds for and rebranding it for Aston.
I inquired why it was selling for almost half as much as the $119 USM street price in the US. He said he didn't know, only that the Aston mount was being marketed to a specific section of the mic buying population... which I took to imply "cost conscious" shoppers. My speculation was the US price of the USM was probably being set by whomever distributes Rycote to US resellers.
I ordered one (I really like it). And told my brothers-in-tone about it over in the 3U audio thread and soon more folks were buying the cheaper Aston Rycote mount for our non-Aston mics and chatting it up over there. This morning, possibly coincidentally, the price of the Aston Rycote mount had jumped to $79. A $15 jump overnight, for a product that until recently streeted for $64 off a MSRP of $75.
So, fellow gearheads, here lies the truth. Rycote is still selling the exact same shockmount as their $119 USM for $79. If you want to pay $40 more for the same product, that's your individual choice, but if you, like me, prefer not to overpay for the same mount, buy the Aston branded Rycote for $79 and you'll have beer and pizza money to spare.
