There is something to be said for the dry, in your face presence of hip hop drums. Not so much the old 808 sound. I'm talking about the dry, tight, snare-kick-hat sound. Syncopated. It's a back beat that hard to top. I'm going to start experimenting with this a little bit and see what happens.

Try to avoid that ice pick-in-the-ear side stick, unless that's what you're going for.

I've been finding some cool single hits in Stylus. Tons of kicks and snares.

This is a fantastic bit of kit to create your hip hop kick. You can tweak a ton of parameters and spend endless hours perfecting your low bang. www.ismism.de/BazzISM.htmCheck her out, this big bottomed girl.

Let's see, if you go to their site, ismism.de, then navigate to the product page > Bazzism > download/purchase Bazzism, you can download either the Windows or Mac versions (AAX included), test the plug in demo mode and if it is all good on your system you can purchase by way of PayPal (it says to please attach the Lock Code) and get the registration code to enable you to install it on up to three of your computers, each having their own unlock code. I hope this works out for you as this is a way cool tool/instrument. Sorry for the latency of my replies, I have like a thousand things to do as I am leaving for a month in New York away from base here in Basel to deal with family stuff and have been really busy running around trying to fit in my 25 hour days in the space of the regular 24.

I've always preferred the 606 to the 808. Something more lo-fi about it, very lovable

Hey now @johnkenn, something new came down the pike the other day that I think is utterly fantastic because it is so well thought out and can do so many wonderful things in so many wonderful ways, that is, if you would like to create killer kick drums. It is call Punchbox and it is developed by D16 Audio Group. It is coded for AAX for Mac as well as for Windows so it should have you covered. I auditioned it and it is just killer. It is sample based as well as generating tones that can be combined. It is drag and drop and you can even export your created wave file. There are loads of presets to get you started and to muse your creaticity. It has all bases covered in my book. If Bazzism is cool then this is absolute zero at -273.15° Celsius. Here is a link to a video that shows what this machine is made of. Edit: You can use it to process snares, toms or any other sound that suits your fancy. Puchbox by D16

I've always preferred the 606 to the 808. Something more lo-fi about it, very lovable I really like the TR-707, as used in Mr. Fingers hits, etc, check out "Washing Machine" changed my whole world regarding synth tracks. My favorite cheap XOX style beat machine is the Korg Volca Beats. I got mine for about $130, it's got that low end thud for days. For acoustic sounds you're probably want to do some sampling of live drums. Throw some hits in an MPC or something. That's how it's traditionally done by lots of people. I still haven't delved into sampling plugins on the computer but I know they are out there. TAL has a really cool one. Maschine, I bet that gets the job done.

I bought Maschine and have been pretty settled on using its 808s to build beats... Did you buy the HW and SW package or just the SW? I was debating about getting the software however many have told me the HW and SW really ties the whole package/ experience together and makes the workflow more efficient. What are your thoughts ?

I bought the Mikro...and it's pretty good. I think the pad sensitivity might be a step up from the PadKontrol I had...but there's still some weirdness if you're trying to - say - do really fast repeats with a snare or something.

Yes the mikro is the one I was liking price wise and looking at. I want to be able to research it a bit more and watch more tuts on it before I commit. How are the sounds that come with it ? Have you purchased any extras kits/ sounds for your mikro?
