Having kinda decided on a Bluey, I looked up the Wes Audio NG76s after you mentioned it and it's got a really amazing feature set! Can you give any feedback yet as to how it sounds? Thanks Initial testing: excellent tonal/saturation options, useful sidechain filters, stereo matching is tight, and the plugins just work. I'm hoping to spend some time getting a feel for all of the different saturation options this weekend. I will say these are not the 1176s for those prone to decision paralysis while tracking/mixing. Impressed with WesAudio gear and software. I listened to the review of Mixbus TV of NG76 and all I can say is wow - the designer really is Poland's late great Dave Hill. I love how there's a F and G revision. I really like the F rev and the G rev with no TX on the I/P is like an 1178 which I've always highly rated. I think the NG76 would make an ideal tracking compressor where one doesn't want to bake in too much colouration (like an A rev might for example) but still get the envelope and vibe of an FET comp - plus the Mix control allows for even more precise dialing in of the amount of vibe and colour you might want as your tracking. I'm really, really tempted to get into this plugin controlled analogue processor things that's happening now. The price is not too crazy either, not cheap, but not over priced for what's on offer.

I really don't think you'll be disappointed in them. I've been pleasantly surprised by the "modern" rev G setting and totally expect this will show up on busses. I haven't tried an 1178 before, but get the appeal now! I picked them up to be "an ideal tracking compressor" and am happy to see that they're going to be a lot more than that. Definitely a great value.

Remember that an 1178 is based on the 76H. Maybe, thehightenor. you need an 1178 reissues? And then pair that was a 500 series D rev clone and a 500 series F rev clone. There are a few sources . . . hairball and stam come to mind, and what drbill mentioned.

I thought the H was just a faceplate change vs. the G? Did you, now? Maybe there were changes. Just found this from Universal Audio: Revision G (AKA “Blackface”) Design Date: Not indicated Serial Numbers: 7053-7651 Removed the input transformer, and replaced it with a differential input op amp stage Removal of program dependency Revision H (AKA “Silverface”) Design Date: Not indicated Serial Numbers: 7652- 8000+ Faceplate is brushed aluminum with red “Off’ button; this is the only revision with a blue UREI logo Removes Universal Audio branding VUi meter is changed to Modutec "light box" type, with two internal lamps source: www.uaudio.com/blog/1176-la2a-hardware-revision-history

OK, plug in an 1176 G revision and one channel of an 1178 and tell me they sound the same, since you offered the Rev G as being the same as my suggestion about the 1178 being essentially the same as a rev H. (using a single channel, of course) . . . and tell me if they sound the same.

I don't need a stereo 1176 and also whatever I buy it has to have a Mix knob as I'll likely only be tracking with it and I want to be able to dial in the vibe and flavour to suite. STAM .... I simply don't have the patience to purchase from STAM, the owner doesn't do business in a way that suits me. Just a personal thing, no reflection on the company. I'm not after a D revision so at this point I think I'm going to go for the NG76 - I'm 90% there - I need to decide before 31st as there's a sale on at my dealers :-)

I don't own all of that gear, so can't do that test. All old gear sounds different unit to unit...so.....

Vintage audio m76. That thing sounds great. Of all my 76s that I have the m76 is getting used the most. I have the reissue, hairball, audio scape and a mohog. All great but the vintage audio m76 is my favorite. Oh can't forget my lin76 which is very dirty sounding.

I was about to pull the trigger on a Wes Audio NG76 and with my finger poised over the BUY button ....
I have this little voice on my shoulder saying "buy the BLA Bluey .... it's more rock n roll and vibey"
Thing is, I literally only want this 1176 for tracking, I simply do not have the spare time and patience at the moment for channel based hybrid mixing (I have hardware on my stereo mix bus)
So it's going to be used for tracking, vocals, BV's, bass, guitar (sometimes paired with an LA2A or Retro STA Level depending on the song - or maybe not used at all)
The mix knob is appealing (the Wes Audio NG76 has a mix knob too)
This all comes down choosing between a unit based on rev F&G vs a unit based on rev A. The main use will be tracking vocals - perhaps 75% of the time
It's driving me crazy - and NO I cannot afford both - I am beyond spent up this year!

It has a mix / blend knob, it does blue & black. Yes, it's sort of expensive but it does what's required and you don't have to choose. I'm not a 1176 super fan and even I didn't mind it..

The mix knob on an 1176 is a useful feature for someone with my approach. Get "some of the vibe" then finish with plugins in the mix. IME, I get a lot more action from plugins when there's some tone pre baked in - plugins aren't great at producing tone!

I'm still on the Splice as well. Yeah, I was always quite keen on the Splice MK2. But it's one of those compressors I know a few people who have bought and sold, because they couldn't gel with it. On paper it's a great idea and super flexible but I'm not certain I'm convinced by it's modern take on a 76's tone. Still, I've not totally dismissed it because given my list of wants it's the closest fit and basically ticks all the boxes!

May I ask, why aren't you a fan? It's an iconic tone and action. I use plugin versions of it all the time.

May I ask, why aren't you a fan? It's an iconic tone and action. I use plugin versions of it all the time. Iconic? The LA-2A / 1176 combo is iconic and the 2A does most of the heavy lifting. I've never once overshot a 2A but then again I don't record drums with them because they're not suited to it. I've used 1176's since the days of Uni to smash drum busses, record vocals, even used them lightly on acoustics.
Simply put, I'm over them. Some modern productions (mostly not western actually) absolutely wow me and I'm chasing that rainbow, they have honestly sparked a fire I've not had for a long while. With the likes of Chandler Opto's which are fast, hi-fi ("betterizers") plus some none retro chasing plugins I find stuff like the 1176 just superflous. I respect the recordings of yesterbeard, I listen to a lot of songs constantly from back then but they don't make my monitors light up like the best of modern productions. The 1970's called and they can have their 1176 back. ...
P.S This is completely and utterly personal preference, I'm sure some would say ohh there's too much clarity it seems unglued yada yada.. Whatever..

Thanks, and fair enough I understand what you’re saying plus it would be boring if we all had exactly the same tastes and preferences.

I can't remember the last time I used an LA2a on vocals! Or the CL1b! They both just sit there, glaring at me . . . granted, a 2a is my favorite on bass these days.

But so does the Retro STA Level and the Phoenix Mastering Plus :-) Choices .... fun to have :-) Do you track vocals without compression?

SNIP Do you track vocals without compression? Hardly ever. I use very little compression from the tubes and FETs but I am accustomed to the tonal imprint. But it does happen!

Between you me and the wall, my vintage 2A's were a bit too vintage. I serviced them, new tubes etc. but the Stam was quite a bit clearer and less finnicky, that being said neither do I really, simply put the Acme Opticom and Chandler Opto do a better job. Depends on the mic really, if I'm using a C800 or clone then it has to be the LA-2A as it smooths like nothing else. It is a PITA mic but I do love it, for anything else I'll err towards something different. Tele 251 & Chandler Opto is just yeahh..
Although the Shelford had quite the impact, everything I ran through it sounded like the Shelford and that is both its biggest strength or weakness dependant on who you ask.

I'm a big fan of the AS76D while tracking vocals. Brings the vocals a bit further forward and adds some meat to the tone. Tracking; I usually am conservative and peak at -7dB (or thereabouts) at the loudest parts. It just catches the incosistensies of the vocal in a way I like. I also have a couple different LA2A's but never do the 1176 -> LA2A thing while tracking. I'm too afraid of killing a good take because it over compressed. Just one compressor with faily light reduction is all I want on tracking.
