Since were talking about this, what about the other solution which is to put the computer with the audio interface in a room 10 feet away? There's the elongated chord to the video monitor, the elongated keyboard cable (I've found wireless being very sketchy even a couple of feet away ) , the elongated mouse chord, the elongated midi cables, the elongated dsub cables etc. etc. Is anybody doing this here? I put my PC into a closet a couple of years ago, what a relief! The noise was driving me crazy before. I use a 16 foot USB extender connected to a USB hub. All USB devices go to the hub, including the wireless keyboard/mouse receiver, Kemper, printer, Wahoo, and Midex 8 with no problem. I have the RME UFX going to a separate USB extender, though I haven't tested to see if that's necessary. I also use two 20 foot cables for my two 24 inch monitors, one DVI and one HDMI. I've got a Synology DiskStation DS1812+ 8-bay hot-swappable network attached storage device in the same closet. It's currently populated with 5 WD Red 3Tb disk drives, set up so that if a drive fails it can be replaced without taking the system down and without any data loss. I use it to back up all the PC's and media devices in the whole house automatically on a weekly basis. Beautiful! About two months ago one of my old Seagate 500Gb drives in my DAW PC died, so I replaced it with a Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD. It got good reviews, so I thought I'd give it a try.

So I wonder what - if any - advantages I will get from the SSD being a "write-to" drive? I don't really need lower latency...Maybe this will solve some of the issues I've been having with PT12...I've had to raise the disk cache from "normal" because I was getting some CPU spikes. Wondering if that has more to do with 12.4 though. Faster write speed, faster read speeds. Definitely a huge boost to my Mac's performance. ALSO. This: support.apple.com/en-us/HT201666

Last internal conventional harddrive i bought was a WD red. very quiet, 24/7 durability, works great. In the meantime i had a Samsung AND a Seagate failing. The WD runs and runs and runs silently. Great HD.

When I had the Seagate, I was having PITA issues with CPU overloads in PTs - which I hadn't had in years. I kind of attributed it to 12.4 being a little flaky. Had to futz around with the disk cache. I have 16gb RAM, and ended up with a sweet spot of 1GB on disk cache. Since installing the SSD, I haven't had a single one. Haven't changed the disk cache back to normal, but I don't see the CPU spikes I was seeing when adding really intensive plugs
