Hey
So, I have my drummer friend, Matt Aston, coming over tomorrow. He’ll probably bring his 4 piece rogers kit. Tracking my new song “tell me love” which has a psychedelic rock feel with repetitive electric guitar riff
In the past, I have tracked him using the Glynn John’s technique and my 2 diy c12 and u47 for overheads, and his AKG on kick and 57 on snare.
I have my 2 Dizengoff d4’s and my apollo here for pres and my 2 warm audio WA-76'. I have neve 73 and the api and neve 88s channel strip plugs from UA that can be used in unison.
I also have a pair of matched octava mod sdc.
So, for tomorrow, I am thinking of switching things up and using the 2 octavamods as overheads probably into the neve 88r s unison ua pre and the maybe the 47 and c12 on kick or snare.
Thoughts for drum tracking ?
thanks
kcat

If the 47 is fet I would for sure throw that on kick, especially on a nice Rogers kit will shine there. Usually only throw a ldc on snare if it's brushes. Although my favorite position is an ldc about a foot away from the snare down on the ground pointing up at the snare/floor tom/kick NUKED with an 1176 and mixed in low

Take your old setup and rejig the mic placement.
C12's spaced just above kick height, a U47 on kick and one of the Oktava's on the kick mic. I love them as close mics, they're my go to for the beater side of the kick or snare bottom (I use an M201 on top). Run the C12's through a compressor and that'd be 4 tracks of big washy sounding psychedelic thump and crash.
